Positive news for separating parents.

The Family Mediation Council has shared an encouraging update from the Ministry of Justice about the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme.

While the final budget for 2026/27 is still being confirmed, the Ministry of Justice has indicated that continued funding for mediation vouchers is expected and mediators should continue to process vouchers as normal.

This is very positive news for families.

💬 What is the mediation voucher?

The government currently provides up to £500 towards the cost of family mediation where discussions involve arrangements for children.

The aim is to help separating parents resolve issues outside of court in a more constructive and child-focused way.

💡 Mediation may even be free

When the mediation voucher is combined with Legal Aid, mediation can often be free for both parents.

At 174 Family Law, we are able to offer both Legal Aid and mediation vouchers, helping ensure mediation is accessible to everyone regardless of financial circumstances.

Helping parents reduce conflict and keep children at the heart of decisions is at the centre of the work we do every day.

If you would like to find out whether Legal Aid or the mediation voucher scheme could apply to you, please get in touch.

International Women’s Day

A brilliant International Women’s Day event organised by the wonderful Jo Downey from Datalaw at the Racquets Club in Liverpool – bringing together inspiring women and powerful conversations around mindset, resilience and supporting the next generation.

One of the themes that really resonated with me was the Power of Paradox, shared by Sara Richardson . So often we try to resolve contradictions in our lives, yet sometimes growth comes from learning to hold them rather than fight them.

Annette Barnes reminded us that the tools to manage pressure and remain present are often simple but powerful. A moment of mindfulness can reset everything. One practical technique we explored was the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise:
• 5 things you can see
• 4 things you can hear
• 3 things you can touch
• 2 things you can smell
• 1 thing you can taste

Alongside this, techniques such as box breathing help us pause, reconnect with our bodies and bring our focus back to the present moment.

Fran Costello spoke about energy, performance and resilience, reminding us that resilience is not just mental — it is physical, emotional and purposeful.
• Are we balancing energy in vs energy out?
• Are we prioritising sleep and recovery?
• What is our inner voice saying to us?
• And perhaps most importantly — what is our purpose?

Finally, hearing about the work of The Girls’ Network from Ellie was a powerful reminder that International Women’s Day is also about lifting the next generation of women and girls, ensuring they have the support, opportunity and confidence to thrive.

A lunch full of insight, reflection and connection. A reminder that when women share knowledge and support each other, incredible things happen and my team are a shining example of this , , , , and .ather5566. Happy IWD26 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

You’re going to see lots of posts this week on all social media channels promoting Family Mediation Week and especially our sister profile

So What is Family Mediation Week?

Family Mediation Week is an opportunity to raise awareness of family mediation and of the benefits it can bring to separating families. Our aim is to let more people know about the benefits of family mediation and encourage separating couples to think about family mediation as a way of helping them take control, make decisions together and build a positive future for their family.

It’s about changing the narrative in relation to how families manage their separation. Divorce and separation is a life event, changing lives forever. Raising awareness of mediation is to help families see that navigating their next chapter doesn’t have to be through a contentious process or a battle. It’s about managing those emotions and channeling that energy in a positive way to help you to work together to secure the best outcomes for you and your children.

Welcome to day 1. Lots of events and live webinars going on. Check out this link for more details.

Having been involved with charities supporting children and their voices for over 20 years it’s been my aspiration to fill the void of bespoke online support dedicated to children and young people navigating the changes going on within their family unit and the conflict that can arise from this.

And that is why I am ecstatic with the launch of Split Happens created specifically with this aim in mind.

We all navigate change and manage our emotions differently. Our children are exactly the same. Some will talk to friends, some will talk to family members and there are those who simply don’t want to talk about it at all. The latter tend to independently explore answers to any questions they have through the internet or social media channels but this is unfiltered and not written for our young people.

This is where split happens comes in, a safe online presence with a smart chatbot which only draws from expert approved content and real stories, to include content from our very own Voices in the Middle.

A safe space to be heard without judgement whilst providing information and signposting to help our children and young people in a way they need.

Check out their insta page here and follow.

Thank you amicable and Your Direction for all of the hard work and commitment in making this happen. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Count down to naughty elf coming very very soon AND raise money for Mind.

Every year friends of mine create and an advent countdown to Christmas with numerous recordings of the naughty elves getting up to mischief. The desire and momentum for the advent has built over the years that this year the producers Juel Waste Management Limited are using the countdown to raise money for the mental health charity Mind.

Christmas is always presented as the perfect sparkly happy family time. Sadly however this is far from the truth for lots of people and this time of year exacerbates the sadness and grief many experience.

So with this in mind please share the joy created with the advent naughty elves and help raise money for Mind and all those suffering with their mental health at this time of year…

2 more sleeps.

🌿 Good Divorce Week 2025 🌿

There are lots of posts this week highlighting Resolutions Good Divorce Week. So who are Resolution and what is Good Divorce week.

Resolution is an association of over 6500 family justice professions such as lawyers, mediators and financial experts committed to a non confrontational approach to family disputes. Indeed, professionals collaborating together to prioritise the needs of the children and supporting families through the separation process.

Which brings us to the objectives of this week.

This week is to shine a light on better ways to separate — encouraging dignity, respect, and collaboration during one of life’s most challenging transitions. The professional are there to facilitate this but sometimes the emotions that flow with a family dispute can cloud our judgement, hence the need for the right support from the right professionals to guide you through separation such as :

⚖️ Family lawyers who focus on resolution, not conflict
🕊️ Mediators who help couples communicate and find common ground
💬 Counsellors who support emotional wellbeing
💷 Financial advisers who ensure security and clarity for the future

Whilst this campaign takes place over one week, its significance is far greater. Every day, families across the country face decisions that shape their lives — and their children’s — for years to come. By accessing the right support, families can reduce conflict, protect children from emotional harm, and move forward with dignity.

A “good divorce” is not about endings, but about building healthier new beginnings.

So whilst this is good divorce week it is important to continue to promote awareness, compassion, and collaboration in family separation throughout the year— for the wellbeing of everyone involved.

Today sees the launch of initiative urging schools and parents to act to protect our children from the fall out of parental separation.

Children’s education and wellbeing is at risk as parental separation disputes spill into schools, says a survey of teachers

More than half of all teachers are being dragged into the fallout of family break-ups according to a new national survey, with teachers reporting significant disruption to children’s learning, attendance and mental health.

Released today by The Parents Promise, a campaign group working to change the culture of separation in the UK and provide better support for families during and after the separation process, the survey reveals the extent to which learning environments are being drawn into family disputes.

According to the survey of thousands of teachers across the country:
● 58% say their school has been involved in disputes between separated parents.
● 61% have witnessed one parent trying to cut the other out of school communications.
● 1 in 5 have seen parents attempt to block the other parent from collecting their child.

Parental separation is a reality for nearly 280,000 children each year in the UK and when disagreements spill into school life, children often bear the emotional and educational cost.
Teachers warn that when parental disagreements follow them into the classroom, it’s children who lose out. 8 in 10 teachers reported a negative impact on pupils’ attendance and performance, while 9 in 10 teachers say student mental health has suffered.

Parental separation can also place a strain on staff wellbeing and school-parent relationships. However, despite the extent of the impacts, most schools are currently ill-prepared when it comes to managing parental separation issues, with limited training, policies and safeguarding protocols.

Parents promise have jumped into help fill the void and created tools and resources to help educate teachers and provide mechanisms to help signpost families to the positive support they need.
