Just another load of 'Same Old, Same Old': Thoughts as we enter our first full working week of 2024

Plough Monday, the first Monday following the twelfth day, led us into our first full working week of the year. Not that thereโ€™s likely to be much ploughing going on in many parts of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

Agricultural Land and Ancient Woodlands are being devastated to make way for railways that such a small proportion of the population will ever use, along with Eco-Friendly habitats!
Acres of warehousing abound.

It's strange to see big storage buildings popping up where farms used to be. And houses planted in areas where wildlife could once run free. Changing how rainwater flows whilst quizzically wondering why we keep having new flooded areas.

Thereโ€™s an interesting contradiction. At the same time, loads of money is going into big train projects like HS2 and the Oxford-Cambridge line, yet there's not enough available to keep our roads in good shape and flood-free.

Itโ€™s not as though any locals will be able to catch a train from London to Birmingham either to take any traffic away from the locally burdened roads. Insufficient funds even to keep the drains clear too, it would appear.

So here we are, stepping further into 2024, the business landscape awakens from its holiday slumber, bracing for the predictable post-holiday splurge. We're navigating the familiar hustle of catching up, a routine yet energetic start to the New Year.

Recent data seems to follow us rather than inform us. Oft-times reinforcing what is so evident. A notable deviation is observed in the very reduced number of house completions compared to previous years. By that, I mean build completions and not sales completions. This warrants attention for potential market shifts.

It's good to see a conveyancing sector, though, being buoyed by the vigorous efforts of independent contributors, standing out as a beacon of activity and potential.

Then comes the 'same old, same old' rhetoric from government officials and the so-called "leveller-uppers." Their repeated declarations about increasing housing stock starkly contrast with the on-ground reality.

The continued narrative often overlooks the significant gap in actual housing construction, unjustly placing the burden on local councils for the absence. Forgetting the developers who have planning permission yet fail to build.

This discrepancy begs the question: what genuine steps are being taken to improve housing availability? It's imperative that pressure be placed on developers to facilitate effective social housing projects.

Numerous organisations are ready and willing to undertake affordable housing construction, provided they receive the necessary support and incentives.

Seriously, addressing the housing shortage is not an overnight task. The ongoing cycle of blame offers little in terms of practical solutions. In areas where the consequences of large infrastructure projects are evident, developments appear to be impacting local communities more than benefiting them.

The irony of large warehouses replacing agricultural land is not lost, contributing to strained water tables, while enormous investments in projects like HS2, serving only a minority, overshadow the need for fundamental road maintenance.

As we forge ahead in 2024, the persistent challenges in the housing and infrastructure sectors call for a balanced and environmentally conscious approach to development.

The hope for this year lies in moving beyond the 'same old, same old' rhetoric to actionable strategies that address these pressing issues. We need to make sure we're building in a way that's good for both people and nature.

Here's hoping this year we see some real action being taken rather than just being talked about.

Want a useful prize, all about the Great Outdoors?

As time is running out in 2023, I thought it a good time to let everyone know that time is also running out on some great prizes for 3 lucky winners of my online quiz. December 30th at midnight is the last day.

Choose your annual subscription to three great charities who work tirelessly to support our use of the great outside. It's not so much fun now with the current weather; just great, though, when we can get out and about.

Joint subscription to either The Woodland Trust or The Open Spaces Society. Any non-property experts just select when you answer which one you want to explore with your partner. For property experts, legal or otherwise, there is a superb charity called The Law Foundation to tickle your fancy.
There are two sets of questions, so there are two chances. The first set is for now, and try the other later. You have until the 30th on both.
Both sets are about buying properties. The first coming your way now is a little more direct. The second set is a little more festive, and they come later. All questions need either a Yes or No answer!

1. Searches essential: do all houses have to have property searches?
2. Easement: can a right of way make a difference to your property value?
3. Boundaries: does a Land Registry Plan show you the correct property boundaries?
4. Insurance: is building insurance necessary before you move into a house?
5. Completion: does the completion date coincide with the moving date?

Jot down the numbers from 1-5 and put down a Y or N next to each of them. Send me an email to [email protected].

Let me know if you are a property professional. Your prize could be with The Environmental Law Foundation. Others trying their hand tell me which you would like The Open Spaces Society or The Woodland Trust.

OK, they might not have been much fun, the prizes make it worth it and the next five questions are a lot more festive.

A brief reminder of my quiz and the membership prizes available to you as you read something of my story.

The Journey Through Nature:
My Foundation for Supporting Environmental Charities

As I reflect on my support for environmental charities like the Woodland Trust, Open Spaces Society, and Environmental Law Foundation, I realise that my journey, rich in diverse natural experiences, has been the bedrock of this passion. Let me take you through the landscapes of my youth that shaped my love for nature and commitment to environmental conservation.

Early Days: A Prelude to Nature's Symphony
My story begins in Glasgow but quickly transitions to the rural serenity of Wiltshire. Though only an infant during this time, the seeds of my connection to nature were sown in these tranquil settings. However, it was in the verdant countryside of Yorkshire that my conscious bond with the environment began to flourish. The rural backdrop of RAF bases served as my playground, offering family walks through lush landscapes and playful splashes in shallow rivers.

Eastern Scotland: Where Nature's Magic Deepened
Our move to eastern Scotland, near the historic Pitreavie Castle, marked a significant chapter in my relationship with the natural world. Here, I had the freedom to roam countryside lanes and experience the allure of nature's tranquillity, especially under the starry night skies. These moments were more than just adventures; they were lessons in appreciating the beauty and importance of preserving our natural heritage.

Norfolk: A Canvas of Exploration
In Norfolk, set against the backdrop of my father's transition from wartime aviation to Cold War duties, I discovered the joy of unbridled exploration. The expansive landscapes of Thetford Chase, with its vast forests and sandy riverbeds, became my playground. Although the shallow riverbeds were nothing like the streams carved into the hillsides of fife, they were fun indeed. Here, I learned the value of open spaces and the joy of discovering nature's hidden gems.

Oxfordshire/Berkshire: Embracing the River Life
Our relocation to the Thames Valley during my teens introduced me to the joys of river life. The Thames became a symbol of endless exploration and appreciation of our natural waterways. This period was pivotal in reinforcing my connection to waterways and landscapes, further nurturing my passion for environmental conservation.

A Commitment to Environmental Conservation
This journey, rich with natural encounters across the UK, has been instrumental in shaping my support for environmental charities. From the enchanting woodlands that resonate with the Woodland Trust's mission to the freedom of open landscapes echoing the principles of the Open Spaces Society and the diverse uses of these environments aligning with the Environmental Law Foundation's advocacy, each experience has deepened my commitment to protecting our natural world.

As I share this journey, I hope to inspire others to appreciate and preserve our precious natural environments. Our collective efforts are crucial in ensuring these landscapes continue to inspire and nurture future generations.

Get answering my quiz that ends tomorrow. Find my earlier posts on this social media channel to win one of the prizes of a yearโ€™s subscription to your choice of charity. You could just tell me which of the charities you like. Either way, get that email to [email protected] by midnight on the 30th December. .

In order to give you a slightly better idea of the outstanding work the three charities do, I asked them if they could produce a brief statement. Probably the best-known one is Woodland Trust. Personally, I subscribe to all three. It would be a hard choice if I had to choose just one.
