Most couples assume that leaving everything to each other will protect their children.
But sometimes, life changes.
And thatโs where something known as sideways disinheritance can happen.
For example, when one partner passes away, everything may be left to the surviving partner with the intention that it eventually passes to the children later on.
But if circumstances change in the future, such as remarriage, a new Will being written, or no updated planning being put in place, those assets could end up passing elsewhere instead.
In some cases, children from the original relationship may receive far less than intended, or nothing at all.
Itโs not something most families expect to happen.
Which is why proper estate planning is so important.
The right planning can help make sure your partner is looked after during their lifetime, while also protecting what should eventually pass to your children.
