URGENT SSP UPDATE

April 2026 SSP Changes: What Every Employer Needs to Know

From April 2026, two key changes to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) apply to every employer — regardless of size or sector.

What’s changing?
• SSP is now payable from day one (no more 3 waiting days)
• No minimum earnings threshold — all employees now qualify

What this means for your business
If you employ part-time or lower-paid staff, you may now have new SSP obligations.
But more importantly… many sickness absence policies are now out of date.
If your policy still refers to waiting days, it’s no longer accurate — and that’s not a great position to be in.

There’s also a practical impact:
• Every absence now has a cost from day one
• Short-term absence management needs a rethink
• Return-to-work processes and trigger points may need updating

We’re currently helping businesses to:
• Review and update sickness absence policies
• Ensure compliance with the April 2026 changes
• Put practical absence management processes in place

If your policy hasn’t been reviewed this year, now is the time.
Feel free to message me or comment below if you’d like to discuss what’s involved.

Are your employment documents up to date?

With a number of significant changes to UK employment legislation, now is the ideal time for employers to review their employment contracts and workplace policies to ensure they remain compliant and protect the business.

Up-to-date documentation can help reduce the risk of employment tribunal claims, ensure managers handle issues consistently and clearly set out the rights and expectations of both employers and employees.

We are currently supporting businesses with updating their employment documentation and are offering fixed-fee packages:

Updated Employment Contract
A legally compliant, modernised contract including key clauses covering matters such as duties, working arrangements, confidentiality, intellectual property and post-termination restrictions.

New Bespoke Staff Handbook
A tailored handbook covering essential workplace policies including flexible working, absence management, harassment, data protection, whistleblowing, AI usage, social media and more.

If you would like to review your employment documentation or discuss how the new legislation may affect your business, please feel free to get in touch.

Here’s a quick question for you.
How certain are you that you’re adequately covered by your current HR policies?
That’s the million-pound question…
…or at least the “tens of thousands of pounds question” of a costly tribunal.
The trouble is, you’ll often only know how good your HR policies really are when they’re up against the situations and circumstances they’re intended to cover.
But having a robust set of policies is much more than protection when things go wrong.
It’s also about creating an employment environment that brings the best out of employees for the good of all concerned.
Contact us to see how we can help you protect your business.
