URGENT SSP UPDATE
April 2026 SSP Changes: What Every Employer Needs to Know
From April 2026, two key changes to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) apply to every employer — regardless of size or sector.
What’s changing?
• SSP is now payable from day one (no more 3 waiting days)
• No minimum earnings threshold — all employees now qualify
What this means for your business
If you employ part-time or lower-paid staff, you may now have new SSP obligations.
But more importantly… many sickness absence policies are now out of date.
If your policy still refers to waiting days, it’s no longer accurate — and that’s not a great position to be in.
There’s also a practical impact:
• Every absence now has a cost from day one
• Short-term absence management needs a rethink
• Return-to-work processes and trigger points may need updating
We’re currently helping businesses to:
• Review and update sickness absence policies
• Ensure compliance with the April 2026 changes
• Put practical absence management processes in place
If your policy hasn’t been reviewed this year, now is the time.
