Have you ever tried to get a transcript of your own court hearing — and been told it could cost hundreds… sometimes thousands?

Most litigants in person don’t even realise:

Transcripts aren’t automatic

The full record of what was said in court isn’t provided

And access to it often sits behind a paywall

Yet that record can be the difference between:

✔️ A successful appeal

❌ Or a dead end

A recent UK Parliament petition (200,000+ signatures) has now forced this issue into the spotlight — questioning whether access to justice should depend on ability to pay.

In practice, I see this constantly:

Orders drafted by the other side don’t reflect what actually happened

Key judicial reasoning is missing

Litigants are left trying to appeal without the full picture

And when they do try to obtain a transcript — the cost alone can stop them in their tracks.

This isn’t just a procedural issue.

It’s an access to justice issue.

I’ve broken this down properly here, including:

- What you’re actually entitled to

- How transcripts work

- What the Government has said

- And what you should do before spending money

Going through family court child proceedings?

Interim “no contact” orders are often presented as temporary, protective steps in private law children cases. In reality, they can operate as something far more significant: the effective suspension of a parent-child relationship, sometimes for months, and sometimes on limited, untested evidence. A recent barrister’s commentary has brought this issue into sharp focus—raising the question of whether the family courts are, quietly and unintentionally, drifting toward a form of interim separation that the Court of Appeal has already warned must be treated as a last resort.
