Nearly half of UK homeowners over 45 describe themselves as just getting by. But the average estate in that group is over £400,000, and 13,000 of them have estates worth more than £1 million.

The inheritance tax threshold has been frozen at £325,000 since 2009 and will stay frozen until 2031. From April 2027, unused pensions will be added to the calculation too.

Do not decide whether you need estate planning based on how you feel financially. Work out what you are actually worth, including your home, savings, and pension. The number will probably surprise you.

The government has committed to not raising income tax, VAT, or national insurance. But the public finances are tight and spending pressures are growing. The money has to come from somewhere.

For people with property, business assets, or accumulated wealth, that is worth paying close attention to. Capital gains tax and inheritance tax are exactly the kind of levers that remain on the table.

Plan before the budget, not after. Once announcements are made, anti-forestalling rules can close your options almost immediately.

In the last year of the old non-dom regime, the number of non-domiciled individuals fell by around 1,200. But the income, capital gains, and national insurance taxes they paid actually increased 9% to £13.6 billion. Capital gains from this group alone rose 58%.

The data only runs to April 2025, before the new residence-based system took over. The real question is what happens to that £13.6 billion once the new numbers come out.

Less people, more revenue for now. But how much revenue is being put at risk by those who have already left?

From April 6th, landlords with income above £50,000 are required to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC under Making Tax Digital. The first deadline was August 7th.

The threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. More landlords will be caught each year and penalties are coming.

If property is a significant part of your wealth, your tax records and your estate plan need to be working together. Do not wait for a deadline to find out they are not.

There is an estimated £22 billion gap in the public finances and the Autumn Budget lands on October 28th. Once changes are announced, your options narrow fast.

New rules come with start dates, transitional provisions, and anti-forestalling measures designed to stop people from acting after the fact. Do not wait for budget day and then ask what to do.

Use the time before October 28th to review your will, understand your inheritance tax position, and get proper succession planning in place.

The standard inheritance tax threshold is still £325,000. It has not changed since 2009. House prices, investments, and the value of most estates absolutely have.

From April 2027, unused pensions and death benefits will also be brought into the calculation. Families who never had an inheritance tax bill are about to get one.

Good estate planning takes time. By the time someone dies and the bill arrives, the options are gone. Plan now with the rules we actually know.

HMRC inheritance tax inquiries are up 18% year on year, and the government is hiring thousands of additional compliance officers to raise even more revenue.

From April 2027, most unused pension funds and death benefits will also be pulled into the inheritance tax calculation. More families will face scrutiny, and the ones who get caught out are almost always the ones whose paperwork is incomplete or out of date.

Estate planning is not just about having a will. It is about knowing what you own, what it is worth, and making sure the evidence is there to support it.
