We made a comic.
31 pages. A murder mystery set in 1923 on a Cognac estate in Charente. A detective named Gaston. A dead patriarch. A handful of suspects.

We live in one of the most comic-obsessed regions in the world (AngoulĂȘme, Charente) and it felt like time we made one ourselves. So we did.

Is it perfect? No. Did we shamelessly place Cognac bottles into a murder mystery and enjoy every single second of it? Oh yeah.

Fully free. All 31 pages. Link in bio.
Feedback is welcome! đŸ•”ïžđŸ„ƒ

They gave us the keys to Maison Fransac, right in the heart of Cognac, on the Quai des Flamands along the Charente river, just a short walk from Hennessy and the Chùteau de François I.

Inside this historic 18th-century residence, we had the rare chance to explore the house at our own pace and taste some of its most remarkable bottles, including the 50-year-old Grande Champagne Cognac, the 70-year-old Hors d’Âge Cognac, and the surprisingly good Fransac Chocolate Liqueur.

Historic setting, serious old Cognacs, and one of the most complete discoveries we’ve made recently in Cognac.

Now available on Cognac-Expert.com.

đŸ„ƒ Clos de la Groie, SĂ©lection de Papy Franck Vieille RĂ©serve | 1947 Cognac Discovery 👉 Available now at cognac-expert.com

Taylor tastes a rare piece of cognac history. A lost barrel from 1947, hidden away behind the chai and rediscovered decades later.

Set aside by the fifth-generation grandfather to mark his son’s birth year, this barrel at Clos de la Groie, a domaine in the northern Fins Bois up in the Hennessy heartland, was found only after Papy Franck’s passing when the family went through his belongings. After 55+ years of patient aging, it was bottled in his honor at a natural 40% ABV, with no color, no sugar, no additives. Just pure Fins Bois cognac straight from the demijohn.
Tasting notes: 🍊 Spice-infused fruits: tangerine, dried mango, apricot jam 🌿 Earthy, mature Fins Bois profile 🍯 Vanilla, oak, and cooked fruit pastes ⏱ Long finish, measured in minutes, not seconds
Not a chest-thumping single cask. This is a sit-down, think-about-it kind of cognac. Fruit-forward, spicy, and full of character from 55+ years of slow maturation.
A rare “Lot 47” bottling in honor of Papy Franck. đŸ„‚

I’m always chasing bottles with real soul and every now and then, you find one that genuinely stops you.

My latest discovery: an XO from Domaine Les Ormeaux. Distilled back in 1972, aged for well over half a century, and still incredibly fresh, elegant and full of life. Pure Fins Bois, no additives, no tricks just honest Cognac from a family estate that knows exactly what it’s doing.

I recently visited Les Ormeaux in Pons and spent time with Laurent, DorothĂ©e and their family. Walking through their old cellars, hearing the history behind the estate, and tasting this lot where it was made — moments like that are why I love what I do.

I’ve now shared the full story of my visit, and of course, we also secured a small reserved allocation of this XO for Cognac Expert.

You can now read more about my visit and get the bottle via cognac-expert.com.

Please note: this is a tiny producer, and supply is genuinely limited. Once Lot 72 is gone, there’s a real chance that’s it.

“The Napoleons of Cognac” was the title of one of our recent newsletters, highlighting how different houses interpret the “Napoleon” designation.

In Cognac, Napoleon is technically equivalent to an XO classification, meaning the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend has been aged for at least 10 years. In practice, many Napoleon bottlings are significantly older, offering a level of maturity that often sits comfortably between classic XO and more extended-aged expressions.

Our selected Napoleons include:

Taylor reviews LE ROCH XO Borderies Cognac and explains why it stands out. đŸ„ƒ

Think pear in a pan, lightly caramelized, slightly floral on the nose, round on the palate but truly three dimensional round with no sharp edges. It is smooth, easy to drink and remarkably balanced for an XO from Borderies. A genuine value for money Cognac that overdelivers.

In our recent family tasting of small producer XOs, this bottle came out on top.
