If you live in Spain as a non-Spanish resident, your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the physical residence card that proves your legal right to live in the country.
Many residency permits require renewal before they expire, so it’s important to check your card’s expiry date and begin the process in good time. In most cases, you can submit your renewal application within the 60 days before your TIE expires and up to 90 days afterwards, although late applications can involve additional procedures.
The documents you’ll need depend on your residency type, but typically include a valid passport, proof that you still meet the requirements of your permit, completed application forms, and payment of the relevant fees.
Once your renewal is approved, you’ll need to attend a fingerprint appointment before collecting your new card. Processing times can vary across Spain, so starting early can help avoid unnecessary delays.
