What is one thing you wish everyone knew before moving to Spain?
For Hazael Puentes Senan, it’s that moving to Spain is about much more than finding a place to live.
Finding the right visa is important, but having your paperwork prepared beforehand can save you so much stress.
Our Ask Our Team series gives you real advice from the people behind NIE.CAT.

Can you work for a Spanish company while on Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa?
Yes, but there are important conditions. The visa is primarily designed for remote work for companies or clients based outside Spain. If you are self-employed, you can work with Spanish companies, but this cannot exceed 20% of your total professional activity.
Not sure whether your work situation qualifies? NIE.CAT can help you understand the requirements and guide you through the process.

Starting work in Spain? Your Spanish Social Security Number (Número de la Seguridad Social) is one of the first and most important administrative steps you'll need.

If you're planning to work in Spain as an employee or self-employed (autónomo), obtaining a Social Security Number is a legal requirement. Without it, you cannot be registered with Spain's Social Security system or begin employment legally.

Why do you need one?
✔️ Start employment with a Spanish employer.
✔️ Register as self-employed (autónomo).
✔️ Pay social security contributions.
✔️ Access eligible social security benefits.
✔️ Build your contribution and employment record.

Benefits may include:
• Public healthcare.
• Sick leave benefits.
• Maternity and paternity benefits.
• Workplace accident protection.
• Unemployment benefits (where eligible).
• Future state pension entitlement.

Who needs one?
• Employees starting work in Spain.
• Self-employed professionals.
• People relocating for work.
• Applicants for certain work-related residence permits.

Remember, your NIE and Social Security Number are different. Your NIE is for identification and tax purposes, while your Social Security Number is linked to employment and social security.

Contact NIE.CAT today to get your Spanish Social Security Number.

Can I work in Spain with just an NIE?
This is one of the biggest misconceptions we come across.
An NIE is your foreigner's identification number—it is not a work permit.
To work legally in Spain, you'll generally need:
✔️ The appropriate immigration status or authorisation that allows you to work.
✔️ A Spanish Social Security Number.
Knowing the difference can save you time, stress, and unnecessary delays.
Not sure which option is right for you? Get in touch with our team—we're here to help.

Did you know international students in Spain have clearer pathways to employment after graduation?
Spain's updated immigration regulations have made it easier for many international students to combine their studies with work and, where eligible, transition to a residence permit after completing their course.
Understanding your options before your student authorisation expires is essential to ensuring a smooth transition and avoiding gaps in your legal status.
At NIE.CAT, we help students with:
Student visa applications
Renewals
Work authorisations
Post-study residence options
Immigration advice tailored to individual circumstances
If you're studying in Spain or planning to do so, our team is here to help you understand your options.

Did you know that many immigration delays can be avoided?

One of the most common reasons applications take longer than expected is incomplete or incorrect documentation. Missing documents, errors on application forms, or failing to respond to a request for additional information can all add weeks—or even months—to the process.

At NIE.CAT, we help clients prepare accurate applications from the start, ensuring all required documentation is in place before submission and supporting them throughout the process if additional information is requested.

If you're planning to apply for residency, a visa, a TIE renewal, or another immigration procedure in Spain, our team is here to help make the process as smooth as possible.

Did you know?

If you've been researching Spanish immigration, you've probably come across the word Arraigo. But what does it actually mean?

The word Arraigo literally means "roots" or "being rooted." In Spanish immigration law, it refers to the ties you've built with Spain that may allow eligible foreign nationals already living in Spain to apply for legal residence through one of Spain's Arraigo pathways.

Many people think Arraigo is one type of application, but there are actually five different pathways, each with its own requirements.

Swipe through to learn:
✔️ What Arraigo means
✔️ Who it applies to
✔️ The five different types

Want to bring your family to Spain?
If you're an EU or Spanish citizen, your non-EU family members may be eligible for an EU Family Member Residence Card. This residence permit allows them to legally live and work in Spain under the same conditions as EU citizens and is typically valid for 5 years.
Who can apply?
✔️ You must be a non-EU family member of an EU or Spanish citizen.
✔️ You must live together in Spain.
✔️ The EU citizen must be working, studying, or have sufficient financial means.
✔️ You'll need to provide proof of your family relationship, along with the required supporting documents.
At NIE.CAT, we make the process simple. From checking your eligibility and preparing your documents to submitting your application, our team is here to guide you every step of the way.
