In Spain, law enforcement is divided between several police bodies, each with different responsibilities. This can be confusing for international residents, so here is a simple explanation:

🚓 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢́𝐚 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 (𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞)
They work for the town or city council.
Main duties:
– traffic control inside towns and cities,
– parking and road safety,
– local bylaws and noise complaints,
– minor incidents and assistance to citizens.
You usually see them in urban areas.

🚔 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢́𝐚 𝐍𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 (𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞)
They work for the Spanish Government (state level), and operate in provincial capitals and in urban areas with populations of more than 100,000 inhabitants.

Main duties:
– immigration and passports (NIE, residency, visas),
– serious crime and investigations,
– counter-terrorism,
– public order and large events.

🟢 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥
They also work for the Spanish Government, but mainly outside cities.
Main duties:
– traffic on interurban roads and motorways,
– rural areas and small towns without local police,
– border control and customs,
– fi****ms and environmental protection.
They usually patrol roads and countryside areas.

🔵 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐬 𝐝’𝐄𝐬𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝𝐫𝐚 (𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲)
They are the regional police force of Catalonia.
Main duties:
– they combine the roles of Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil within Catalonia,
– traffic, crime, public order and investigations in that region.
