🌋 New Permit Rules for Popular Hiking Trails in Teide National Park

Tenerife is planning to tighten access rules for some of the most popular hiking routes in Teide National Park. Visitors will need to obtain a free permit through the Tenerife ON platform before hiking three trails: Pico Viejo, Los Regatones Negros and Chafarí.

👥 Daily visitor numbers will be limited to 225 people: 150 places for individual hikers and 75 for participants in organised groups.

⚠️ Anyone hiking these routes without the required permit could face a fine of up to €600.

🥾 Equipment requirements will also become stricter. Hikers will need trekking boots, long trousers, warm clothing, a hat, gloves, a thermal blanket, a flashlight, a fully charged mobile phone and enough drinking water.

The changes will also affect other trails in the park. On the Telesforo Bravo route, visitor entry intervals will be reduced to 90 minutes, while the rules for the Montaña Blanca–La Rambleta route will be updated.

🏔️ Before setting off, hikers should check the latest access requirements, book their permit in advance and make sure they have all the necessary equipment.

🏡 The Canary Islands May Introduce Restrictions on Property Purchases: What Do We Know So Far?

On 15 October 2026, the Spanish news agency EFE reported that the Canary Islands government had submitted a proposal to Spain’s central government to change the rules governing property purchases across the archipelago. The initiative comes amid an ongoing housing crisis and rising property prices.

📌 What changes are being proposed?

▪️ Buyers may be required to have at least 10 years of continuous registered residence in the Canary Islands, or 15 years with interruptions.

▪️ Individuals may be limited to owning a maximum of two residential properties, located in different municipalities.

▪️ Separate conditions may apply to companies purchasing property.

▪️ Municipal authorities could receive additional powers to regulate property purchases and rentals, potentially including restrictions affecting citizens of non-EU countries.

⚖️ Will these restrictions become law?

At present, this is a legislative proposal, not a law that has entered into force. Further legal and political steps would be required before the proposed measures could be implemented.

The initiative also raises questions regarding its compatibility with European legislation, particularly the principle of the free movement of capital. Its final terms and chances of approval therefore remain uncertain.

🌋 There is a 77.69% chance of a volcanic eruption in the Canary Islands within the next 50 years

According to recent data, the probability of a volcanic eruption occurring somewhere in the Canary Islands over the next five decades is estimated at 77.69%.

⚠️ This is a long-term statistical risk assessment, not a prediction that an eruption is imminent. It also does not identify which island could be affected.

Spain's updated civil protection rules aim to improve volcanic risk maps, monitoring and warning systems, and evacuation plans. Authorities will consider not only lava flows, but also volcanic gases, earthquakes, ashfall and potential underwater eruptions.

The 2021 eruption on La Palma, which lasted almost three months, highlighted the importance of early warnings and emergency preparedness.

🏠 Spain’s Government Reapproves Housing Decrees After Congress Rejection

On Tuesday, October 6, Spain’s Government once again approved two decrees aimed at regulating the housing market. The previous version of these measures was rejected by Congress just a few days ago, so the new documents have been presented with some changes. Their fate will now depend on the Permanent Deputation of Congress (Diputación Permanente), as Parliament has been dissolved ahead of the early elections.

Among the main measures are the possibility of extending certain rental contracts for two years, limits on rent increases, new rules for seasonal and room rentals, and additional protection for vulnerable households facing eviction. The measures also include tax incentives for certain tenants and landlords, a reduction of VAT on protected housing to 4%, and interest-free ICO loans to help with the down payment for a first home.

Special attention is also being given to investment funds and tourist accommodation. The Government plans to introduce restrictions on speculative property purchases by investment funds and change the tax treatment of tourist apartments.

The Government will now need to secure approval of the decrees by the Permanent Deputation. According to EFE, at least one of the two measures could potentially obtain the required majority, while the second one, concerning the automatic extension of rental contracts, faces additional difficulties.
