" Earthquakes and optical Fibers "
Scientists can turn ordinary fiber- optic cables into thousands of mini-seismometers to detect and measure earthquakes in seconds .
• How The Technology Works ?
√ Distributed Acoustic Sensing ( DAS ) :- Devices called interrogators send laser light pulses down unused or dark fiber- optic cables .
√ Light Reflection :- Tiny imperfections in the glass core reflect a small amount of that laser light back .
√ Measuring Movement :- When seismic waves shake the ground, they stretch or compress the underground or undersea cable .
√ Tracking Changes :- This tiny physical change alters how the light travels and changes its frequency , allowing scientists to pinpoint the exact location and timing of vibrations .
* Main Benefits :-
√ Low cost :- Reusing existing cables is much cheaper than installing new , traditional seismic stations .
√ High Density :- Every single meter of cable can act as an individual sensor , creating a massive gird of data .
√ Offshore Monitoring :- Cables already cross the ocean floor , helping scientists watch for Offshore earthquakes and tsunamis where traditional gear is hard to place .
• Now we know better and Fiber optic cables could help us extend our quake awareness unimaginableyby further while potentially redefining our granular understandings of what characterises seismic activity .
