The Ministerial Meeting of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) Champion Countries was convened in Cairo, as part of ongoing international efforts to strengthen migration governance and advance the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
The Republic of The Gambia participated at a high level, with the delegation led by H.E. Mr. Sering Modou Njie, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad. The delegation included H.E. Mr.Hatem Raslan, Ambassador-at-Large of The Gambia and Head of The Gambia Liaison Office in Egypt, as well as Mrs. Ndumbeh Saho, Director of the Diaspora and Migration Directorate.
The meeting addressed key priority areas, including the protection of migrants and the preservation of life, the promotion of safe, orderly and regular migration pathways, as well as support for safe, voluntary and dignified return and sustainable reintegration.
During the discussions, The Gambia highlighted its national progress in migration governance, including ongoing policy and institutional reforms, the adoption of a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, the strengthening of national coordination mechanisms, and the continued review of its Diaspora Strategy.
The Government also underscored its efforts to develop a National Implementation Plan for the GCM, aligned with national development priorities, in addition to its strong and ongoing cooperation with international partners.
On the margins of the meeting, the Honourable Minister held a number of bilateral engagements with his counterparts to further strengthen partnerships and cooperation in migration management and development.
The Gambiaโs participation in this high-level meeting reaffirms its commitment as a GCM Champion Country and its dedication to promoting effective, humane and cooperative migration governance at both regional and global levels.
