سمى بهذا الإسم نسبة إلى جامع العطارين والذى سمى بهذا الإسم لأنه لما بنى خصص بأسفله دكاكين جميعها كانت لعطارين و هو حى جزء منه شعبى ذو طابع أثرى في كثير من مبانيه القديمة
إن "حي العطارين" يغدو "حي الإنسان" في تعدده واختلافه وتلاقي أطيافه وأطرافه.

كما عبر عن هذا التلاحم القاص الروائى محمد عبد الله عيسى فى روايته "العطارين" من خلال التركيبة السكانية الغريبة التى عرفت بها الاسكندرية وتميزت بها، خاصة حى العطارين الشهير المكون من خليط من أبناء البلد النازحين إلى المدينة من شتى بقاع مصر، وكذا الجانب النازحين إليها من أنحاء كثيرة من العالم يونانيين وايطاليين وأرمن وانجليز وفرنسيين وغيرهم، وكذا اليهود فى حارتهم الشهيرة "حارة اليهود"، ومرحلة الحرب العالمية الثانية، وشخصيات نمطية عاشت حياتها على أرض الاسكندرية تجتر آمالها وآلامها وهمومها وطموحاتها، "الشبرو" العائش مع الخمر، "زبدة" بائعة الجبن والبيض والطيور، "فكيهة بنت أختها"، "بوللى"، "كوستا"، "ماريكا"، "كرياكوس"، وغيرهم من الأجانب الذين يمتهنون العمل فى الكازينوهات والباارات، و"عزيزة" التى تبيع جسدها للإنجليز، و "أبو الروس" الذى يعمل مع الشبرو لدى الحاج درويش مقاول الرابش فى كامب شيزار والطابية وينقلون مخلفات الجيش الانجليزى إلى سوق الكانتو فى العطارين على عربات الكارو.. ومحلات الرهونات المتناثرة فى الحى، وأصحابها اليهود "العاذر" و "داود اللئيم"، ومحلات حلويات الشام وأصحابها "لوسيان" و "الياس".
وغيرها من الشخصيات والأماكن المعايشة لواقعها.. هذه هى العطارين حى الاسكندرية العريق من خلال رواية محمد عبد الله عيسى تتلاحم فيها كل هذه الشخصيات فى شخصية واحدة هى شخصية الحى، وتمتزج من كل الأشياء لتشكل السمات الحقيقية لمدينة الاسكندرية.
ومن الروائيين الذين تناولوا حى العطارين أيضاً فى أعمالهم الروائى محمد جبريل فى روايته "النظر إلى أسفل" من خلال العلاقة الحميمة بين بعض الشخصيات النمطية فى مرحلة ما بعد الانفتاح الاقتصادى فى الاسكندرية والارتباط الوثيق بموروثهم الشعبى ورؤيتهم المستقبلية واحلامهم وطموحاتهم، وهى شخصيات وإن كانت مأزومة ومريضة إلا أنها تعبر عن جانب هام من الحياة السياسية التى ترتبط بالواقع والحياة الاجتماعية المميز بها حى العطارين، وقد عبر محمد جبريل عما يعتمل داخل النفس البشرية من أزمات نفسية وانعكاس ذلك على البطل العائش فى الحقيقة يصارعها وتصارعه فى فترة من أخصب فترات الحياة المعاصرة، وفى منطقة من أهم مناطق الاسكندرية تأثراً بالواقع السياسى والاجتماعى وهى منطقة العطارين.
