ICC Moot Court: Team of the University of Tartu

Representatives of School of Law of University of Tartu in International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition.

The ICC Moot Court simulates the proceedings of the ICC. ICC deals with crimes that concern the international community as a whole: genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Founded in 2002 with the Rome Statute, the ICC is the first permanent international criminal court. ICC Moot Court is hosted by the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies and Leiden University. This year, the c

ompetition will take place from 27th of May to 1st of June in The Hague. In 2018, 70 teams from 42 countries will be processing a case addressing fundamental issues in the field of international criminal law. University of Tartu School of Law has participated in the competition from 2017. Each year, the School of Law composes a team of students from 3rd course and Masters students that will represent the University of Tartu in the competition.

A week ago, our team had the opportunity to organise and participate in friendly round with teams from University of Helsinki and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf as part of our preparation journey⚖️

This session pushed us to grow stronger as advocates and as a team — and we’re excited for what’s ahead in the Hague! 🌍✨

Meet Elisabeth Viirsalu, Jessica Niine, Mariia Koladiuk, Kaur Kanarbik and Aurelia Pärtelson, representing Estonia at the ICC Moot Court Competition in The Hague! 🇪🇪

We’ve already begun preparing for the competition, exploring the case, conducting research and developing our written and oral arguments. 💼📚

This journey will challenge our teamwork, perseverance and passion for justice, and we can’t wait to share our progress, insights and behind-the-scenes moments as we move closer to The Hague. ✨

Tahaksid reisida maailma õiguspealinna Haagi? Siis on Rahvusvahelise Kriminaalkohtu (ICC) harjutuskohtu võistlus just sulle!

🤩Tartu Ülikooli õigusteaduskond ja Akadeemiline Õigusteaduse Selts kuulutavad välja kandideerimise Rahvusvahelise Kriminaalkohtu harjutuskohtu võistkonda!🤩

✨Esindustiimi liikmena õpid aasta jooksul, kuidas mõistetakse kohut raskeimate rahvusvaheliste kuritegude üle, muutud kaaslastega memorandumi kallal töötades õigusliku argumentatsiooni meistriks ja saad oma kohtukõne pidamise oskused viia hoopis uuele tasemele. Võistkonna arengut toetavad oma õpetussõnadega tõelised Eesti õiguse superstaarid nii prokuratuurist, advokaadibüroodest kui ministeeriumidest. Aasta tipneb lõppvõistlusega Haagis, lisaks annab see kõik sulle ka 12 EAP-d.

Võistkonna juhendajateks on Liina Lumiste ja Andres Parmas.

👩‍⚖️Curious about how war criminals are being brought to justice? Would like to put yourself to the test in the role of a lawyer or a prosecutor? Dreaming about travelling to The Hague, the world’s capital of law? If that’s the case, the International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition is definitely something for you!

✨As a member of the Team University of Tartu, you’ll learn how the gravest international crimes are being tried, develop into a master of legal argumentation and are offered a chance to take your skills of giving a court speech to a whole new level. Throughout the process, the team is supported and advised by the true superstars of the Estonian legal world - experienced professionals from law firms, ministries and the Prosecutor’s Office. The year of mooting will peak at The Hague where the oral rounds are being held, and in addition, this all will provide you with 12 ECTS.

The team is coached by Liina Lumiste and Andres Parmas.

‼Law students at the University of Tartu in their third year or higher are welcome to apply. To apply to the team, please send:

🌍✨ Our 2025 IBA ICC MCC journey has come to an end.
What a ride it’s been — filled with growth, challenge, and unforgettable memories.

This season was all about self-development. From countless hours of preparation to the oral rounds packed with questions from field experts, every step pushed us to become better versions of ourselves — not just as competitors, but as individuals and teammates.

Our week in the Netherlands was a true rollercoaster 🎢. Stressful oral rounds tested our skills and composure, but in between, we explored beautiful cities, built lasting connections, and shared moments with inspiring, like-minded people from all around the world. 🇳🇱🌍

While we still have to wait a few more weeks for the final results, one thing is already clear — we’re incredibly proud of our performance and everything we’ve achieved together. 💪🏽📈
