Ask accountants whether AI will replace them and you usually get one of two answers.
"Never."
Or: "Eventually."
We wanted a more practical answer. So we asked our accounting teams across our markets a different question:
What would you happily give to tomorrow, and what would you never allow it to decide alone?
The dividing line was consistent.
Automate: invoice matching, bank reconciliations, chasing receipts, consolidation reports, drafting client emails, and processing PDF bank statements.
Never hand over: VAT returns, payroll declarations, annual reports, tax filings, or payment approvals. And everything that requires reading an agreement, understanding a bonus structure, or knowing why an unusual transaction happened.
One answer stayed with us: "Actually everything. But especially payments."
AI can see the ledger. It cannot know the business. That is still the accountant's job.
What would you give to AI tomorrow, and what would you never hand over?
