Celebrating IPO's 50th anniversary during the 26th annual meeting in LA!

Non-traditional marks are one of the many ways that brands can be protected. Whenever a sound reminds you of a product or service, or reminds you of a certain source it is probably protectable by a trademark. Examiners do not always know how to deal with these creative applications so it is key to file them correctly.

Las marcas no tradicionales son unas de las muchas formas de proteger marcas. Cuando un sonido nos recuerda a un producto, servicio o determinada empresa, probablemente sea protegible mediante un registro marcario. Famous and well-known marks (FWKM) registries are useful for brand owners that are operating or whose products have substantial commercial use in the respective markets. The FWKM Committee survey database includes useful practical information in relation to FWKMs, such as timeframes, cost ranges, evidence requirements, and their formalities.

One hundred and one years ago, Dr. Vicente Bermeo Lañas was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

He achieved his law degree thanks to his mother’s support to have a professional in the family. He accomplished her wishes when founding one of the leading international practice law firms before being appointed as a Supreme Court Justice. Three generations later, we still continue his legacy with the strong foundations and values he taught us.

Today we honor his wisdom and share some of his advice with our LEGAL PRACTICE 101 series.

In a civil law system, it is very important to have things on paper. This tip seems obvious, but since the days when Dr. Vicente was practicing until today, we have many cases in which important agreements are left verbally and matters get complicated when issues arise.

“Las cosas importantes hay que tenerlas por escrito.”
Esta recomendación parece obvia, pero desde la época en que el Dr. Vicente ejercía hasta hoy, vemos muchos casos en que los acuerdos son verbales. Al momento de una disputa, se complican las cosas.
