Getting your FBI background check for an Ecuador visa can be a one-month breeze or a four-month nightmare depending on which path you take. Here’s how to do it efficiently.

THE "OLD SCHOOL" WAY (Already Abroad): If you’re already in South America, you can take your own fingerprints using a standard ink pad and FD-1164 cardstock.

Pro Tip: Include two copies of your prints just in case one is smudged. You mail these to the FBI in West Virginia. Expect a 6–8 week wait for processing plus international shipping time.

THE "EXPRESS" WAY (In the USA): If you are in the U.S., go to a participating USPS location. They take your fingerprints electronically. Instead of waiting months, you’ll usually have your digital background check result in about a week. This is the "gold standard" for speed.

Once you have your FBI check, it must be apostilled by the US Department of State in D.C. If you mail it yourself, it can sit in a pile for 8+ weeks. I highly recommend spending roughly $100 on a Private Expediting Service. They physically walk your document into the D.C. office, getting it back to you in about a week instead of two months.

Once apostilled, the document must be translated by a Judiciary Certified Translator in Ecuador.

Use AI to "pre-translate" your document before handing it to the professional. This can drop your costs from $25/page to as little as $12 for the whole document because the translator is simply "reviewing and certifying" your work.

Don't trust the local post for your final documents. Use an Expat Courier (Mule) service. You mail the document to a hub in Miami or Chicago, and they fly it down to Ecuador in a week. It’s safer and faster than DHL.

Your translator takes the document to a local Ecuadorian Notary (usually ~$19) to finalize it. Your document is now "Visa-Ready."

As you can see, this process can take 5 months or just 5 weeks. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the paperwork for your move to Ecuador, don’t hesitate to contact me at EcuaPass.com. I’ve lived through this chaos, and I can help you navigate it!
