University Overview
Founded in 1958, the University of Oulu is a young, rapidly developing institution. Today, the University of Oulu is the second largest university in the country with an enrollment of approximately 11,000 students. Located about four miles north of the town center, the main part of the university is on the Linnanmaa campus, a complex of modern classrooms, libraries, offices laboratories, sports facilities and residence halls.

Faculty
Classes will be taught by University of Oulu faculty members. Exchange student advising will be done by the student’s respective department.

Accommodations
Students will be housed in residence halls of the Northern Finland Student Housing Foundation. Most of the units are apartments with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and private single study-bedrooms furnished with desks, bookshelves, beds, closets, and drawers. Saunas, TV rooms, and laundrettes are also shared by the residents of each unit. The University of Oulu Office of International Relations will assist students in arranging suitable accommodation.

Program Information
The University of Oulu, founded in 1958, has developed quickly into one of the largest and leading universities in Finland. The two main campuses occupy modern, spacious premises and include modern classrooms, sports facilities, and student housing. Today more than 11,000 students call the University home.

Requirements
Students should be prepared to work with considerable independence. Coursework in Finland may be modular, so that students work on one subject area intensively for a time, and then move on to another. Since coursework is available in English, there is no language requirement.
Juniors, seniors, and exceptional sophomores are eligible to participate. Applications are welcome from students in all majors. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 is preferred.

Most university Master's have their application periods open between early December to mid/late January. UAS Master's may have their admissions later, in March. The spring 2018 joint application period is from March 14th 2018 – April 28th 2018 (15.00 / 3 pm UTC +3).

Eligibility for Bachelor's level studies
Eligibility for Bachelor's level studies depends on completing one of the following qualifications:
• Finnish Matriculation examination and upper secondary level education
• International Baccalaureate -examination (IB)
• European Baccalaureate -examination (EB)
• Reifeprüfung -examination (RP)
• Vocational upper secondary qualification of at least three years duration or an earlier corresponding qualification
• Competence based vocational upper secondary qualification, further vocational qualification or specialist vocational qualification or an earlier corresponding qualification
• Foreign qualification that gives eligibility to enrol in a higher education institution of corresponding level in the country of origin
Language Requirements
University of Oulu does not offer English-taught programmes in Bachelor’s level. The University only accepts students who have previous language skills in Finnish language and applicants have to both apply in Finnish and be able to pass the entrance examination in Finnish.
Eligibility to Master's Level Studies
Eligibility to Master's level studies depends on completing one of the following qualifications:
• Applicable Bachelor's degree
• Applicable foreign qualification that gives eligibility to enrol in a higher education institution of corresponding level in the country of origin

Visas

The visa international students need to enter a Finnish university is known as the student resident permit application, and will generally be available at the Finnish embassy in your country. They should be able to help you with the application, but as with most of these documents, you’ll need a variety of paperwork to complete the form, such as proof of financial support, proof of accommodation, your passport, and a letter of acceptance from your university.

Generally your university will help you through the visa application process and will explain what you have to do and bring in detail. The embassy should also be helpful – make sure to contact them first to book an appointment and get the full list of what you’ll need to successfully complete the visa application.

The student visa in Finland must be renewed each year, and that can be done very easily at your local police station without too much fuss – worry about that later.

Prior to going, many people told me that I didn’t need to take Dutch lessons and that everyone would be able to speak English. With this advice in mind, plus the difficulty I encountered in trying to add it into my course load, I decided to forgo Dutch lessons. It is true. Every Dutch person I met spoke flawless English, but now looking back at the experience, I really wished I had spent some time learning the language.

Naturally, over time, you learn the basics: hello, goodbye, and thank you. But if I had learned the language, I feel like the experience would have been so much more. At the very least, you’d be able to read signs and relevant information. But also, by understanding the language, you’re learning more about the culture indirectly.

If you can't fit Dutch lessons into your class schedule, there are other options available to learn the language. You could find a private teacher or split the lessons with another person. Or find a language partner and do a language exchange - learning Dutch basics while teaching the finer details of the English language.

Less well known than its Scandinavian neighbours, Finland boasts a small number of institutions with a good track record. The University of Helsinki is ranked in the world’s top 100. The other characteristic of Finnish higher education is that it prides itself on providing free higher education to ALL, including non-Finnish citizens. Education is seen as having an important role in the development of the knowledge economy.

There has been a considerable expansion of postgraduate programmes in English to attract international students. Add to that a no-tuition fee policy for doctoral programmes, and Finland is becoming an attractive destination for international doctoral students.
