Immigration Procedures during and after Covid-19:

Following on from the global escalation of Covid-19, the Aliens and Immigration Unit stopped receiving asylum applications. From 21st March the Immigration Unit accepts people to arrange their appointments.

Note: When a person present themselves states the intention to apply for asylum to the Aliens and Immigration Unit, is either permitted to immediately lodge the application, or requested to return on another day, at times given an appointment.

During this time asylum seekers do not have access to reception conditions or proof of their status in the country. However, rarely are there reports of this leading to arrest.

REFUGEE APPLICATION - ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE

As soon as you get your Confirmation Letter you are eligible to access certain rights, including access to the coverage of your material needs, and access to public healthcare services.

As soon as you have applied for asylum, and received your Confirmation Letter, you will need to apply for a medical card at the Ministry of Health, or the General Hospital in your district in order to have access to the public healthcare system.

ASYLUM SEEKERS

Your rights as an asylum-seeker

While your application is being examined you will have the legal status of an asylum-seeker and be entitled to certain rights and obligations under the Refugee Law of the Republic of Cyprus.

You are protected against deportation or return to a country where your life or freedom may be in danger on account of your race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion. Even if you enter Cyprus without a visa or entry permit, you should not be deported until your refugee application has received a final decision.

Applying for asylum

You must submit your application at the Police Immigration Office of your District.

You can apply for asylum at the Immigration Office even if you do not have a passport, identity card or any other travel or identity documents.

Asylum applications are thus submitted to Immigration Police, and the competent authority that receives the applications is the Asylum Service of the Ministry of Interior.
