What Happens When You Marry a Costa Rican?

Marriage to a Costa Rican can have important immigration consequences, but it does not mean that a foreign spouse automatically becomes a Costa Rican citizen. Costa Rican law provides specific pathways for foreign spouses to obtain legal status and, eventually, potentially apply for naturalization, depending on their circumstances and the applicable requirements. Marriage, residency and citizenship are three different legal concepts.

Getting married may change your immigration options, but it doesn't automatically change your nationality.

Before 2027: 7 Things Every Expat in Costa Rica Should Check

The end of the year may still feel far away, but September is a good time to make sure your paperwork is in order.

1. Check your passport. Make sure it has enough validity for your upcoming travel plans.
2. Check your DIMEX. Is it current? If not, find out what you need to do.
3. Review your residency status.Know your category and when your current documentation or renewal requirements apply.
4. Check your CCSS status.If your immigration category requires it, make sure your obligations are up to date.
5. Look for pending immigration requirements. Don't assume that silence means there is nothing left to do.
6. Review your travel plans. If you're planning to leave Costa Rica, make sure your immigration documentation is in order before you travel.
7. Keep your important foreign documents accessible. Birth certificates, marriage certificates, criminal records and other documents can become important again when circumstances change.
A little organization now can save you a lot of stress later.

Why Does Costa Rica Have No Army?
It's one of the first things many foreigners learn about Costa Rica, and one of the country's most distinctive characteristics. After the 1948 Costa Rican Civil War, the country's government made the historic decision to abolish the country's military forces.

The decision was later incorporated into the Constitution. Article 12 of the Costa Rican Constitution states that the army as a permanent institution is abolished. Instead of maintaining a standing military, Costa Rica relies on civilian security forces and has invested heavily in institutions such as education and healthcare.

For Costa Ricans, the absence of a permanent army is more than an interesting fact. It is an important part of the country's modern identity and history. For those who come from elsewhere, it's a good reminder that Costa Rica's institutions and history are not necessarily built around the same assumptions as our own.

If I buy a property in Costa Rica, I automatically get residency? This is a myth.

Owning property in Costa Rica does not automatically grant a foreign national legal residency.
However, under Costa Rica's immigration framework for investors, a qualifying investment may provide a basis for applying for Investor residency, provided the applicable requirements are met.
The distinction is important: Property ownership ≠ automatic residency.

Before making a major investment based on an immigration assumption, understand how that investment fits into the applicable legal requirements.

What are we actually celebrating on September 15? 🇨🇷
If you've recently moved to Costa Rica, you've probably noticed that September looks a little different.
Flags appear everywhere. Schools prepare parades. Children carry faroles. And on September 14, the Independence Torch makes its way through the country.

But what is everyone celebrating? On September 15, 1821, the Act of Independence of Central America was proclaimed in Guatemala, marking independence from Spanish rule. The news then traveled through Central America and eventually reached Costa Ric. Today, more than 200 years later, Costa Rica celebrates that moment every September 15 with traditions that have become an important part of national identity.
