🌟 Happy Weekend from Fambove Law Firm 🌟
As we head into the weekend, remember: words matter, online and offline.
📢 The Myth and Reality of Defamation in Cameroon
Many Cameroonians love “kongossa” (gossip) on WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, and in markets — but careless talk or posts can lead to serious legal consequences.
🔹 Myth: “It’s just my opinion or freedom of speech — I can’t be sued.”
🔹 Reality: Freedom of expression is protected, but it does not cover false statements that damage another person’s honour or reputation.
Under Section 305 of the Cameroon Penal Code, defamation is both a criminal offence and a civil wrong.
Possible consequences include:
• 6 days to 6 months imprisonment
• A fine from 5,000 to 2,000,000 CFA francs
• Civil damages claimed by the victim
⚖️ Think before you post. Think before you speak.
Enjoy a peaceful, joyful, and responsible weekend.
Warm regards,
