The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto and University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Toronto (UPAAT) are hosting a community forum to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea and the Maritime and Archipelagic Awareness Month (MANA Mo) this September. The forum will feature a lecture by Professor Jay L. Batongbacal, Director of the Institute for Maritime of Affairs and Law of the Sea (IMLOS) of the U.P. Law Center.

Two international parenting cases. Two very different outcomes. One guiding principle: the best interests of the child.

Earlier this year, we shared a landmark trial decision in which the Ontario Superior Court authorized a mother's relocation with her children to the Philippines after a full best-interests analysis.

Today, we are proud to share another significant result—this time, an order requiring the return of a child from the Philippines to Ontario after the Court found that the child's unilateral removal and continued retention abroad did not alter Ontario's jurisdiction.

Although the outcomes were different, the principle was the same. International parenting cases are not about whether a child should remain in Canada or relocate abroad. They are about applying the law to the unique facts of each family while keeping the child's best interests at the centre of every decision.

We are honoured to have successfully represented our clients in both matters and to contribute to the developing jurisprudence involving international parenting disputes between Ontario and the Philippines.
