Your family doesn't need to know your bank balance over Thanksgiving dinner. 🦃

But would they know who your executor is, where your original Will is, or what needs immediate attention if something happened?

Those are the conversations worth having.

Start with these 4 things. The rest can stay between you and your lawyer.

We’re here to help.

No need to pass the gravy and announce who gets the cottage. 😅

Talking to your family about your estate plan doesn't mean reading your Will aloud or sharing every financial detail.

Sometimes it's as simple as:

“I've updated my documents. Here's where you can find them if you ever need them.”

A ten-minute conversation now can give your family a much clearer starting point later.

🎁 Want to leave a little something to someone special?

Maybe it's a gift of money to a relative, a donation to a charity close to your heart, or a contribution to a cause that means something to you.

Your will can include specific gifts to the people and organizations you care about.

It's one of the many things we'll discuss with you when putting your estate plan together.

Everyone agrees the cottage should “stay in the family.”

Then someone asks who gets August long weekend. 😅

Before passing down a family property, talk about the less sentimental stuff too: ownership, expenses, use and what happens when someone wants out.

Here are 4 questions worth discussing around the table.

“The kids will keep the cottage.”

Sounds simple... until you ask which kids, who pays for it, who gets August long weekend, and what happens when someone wants out. 😅

If keeping a cottage or other family property matters to you, those conversations are worth having while everyone can be part of them.

120km of cycling? Fine. One bug? Absolutely not.

Manitoba Lawyer Explains: Would you want your child receiving their entire inheritance at 18? 🤔

When you have children under 18, your will can include a trust that gives you more control over how and when their inheritance is handled.

You can choose an age that makes sense for your family, while also giving the trustee flexibility to use funds earlier when there’s a good reason to do so.

It’s one of those details that can make a big difference when putting your estate plan together.

And as Philippe points out, 18-year-old decision-making and a few hundred thousand dollars may not always be the best combination. 🚗😅

Marriage. Divorce. Kids. A new Will.

We remember the big life changes. The beneficiary form we filled out years ago? Not so much. 👀

If your life has changed, it's worth checking whether the names on your RRSP, TFSA, insurance and other plans still match the estate plan you want today.
