Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day comes from the story of Phyllis Webstad, who was six years old when she arrived at St. Joseph Mission Residential School in British Columbia wearing a new orange shirt her grandmother had bought for her. The shirt was taken away when she arrived, and she never got it back.

Phyllis later shared her story publicly, and it became the foundation of Orange Shirt Day. The orange shirt represents the loss of identity, culture, family, and dignity experienced by Indigenous children in residential schools.

Observed on September 30, Orange Shirt Day honours residential school survivors, remembers the children who never returned home, and raises awareness about the lasting impacts of residential schools.

The message “Every Child Matters” reminds us that every child is valuable, deserves to be safe and respected, and has the right to belong.
