Many people are surprised to learn that unmarried spouses have the same property division and spousal support rights and obligations as married couples in British Columbia . Unless spouses have a valid agreement saying otherwise, the Family Law Act decides how property, debt, and support issues are resolved. This effectively creates a one-size-fits-all prenup, which may not align with how you would like to arrange your financial affairs.

The choice people have is this: Do you want the government’s prenup, or one tailored to your life, your assets, your financial decisions, and your expectations?

With a properly prepared written agreement, spouses can:

· Decide how property and debt will be divided;
· Protect excluded property and future growth;
· Limit or define spousal support obligations; and
· Create clarity, predictability, and financial peace of mind.

When we chose the name Coast Mountain Law LLP, it wasn’t about changing who we are, it was about better reflecting it. Our firm has grown and evolved over the years, and this name speaks more clearly to the communities we serve and the way we practice law.
What hasn’t changed and won’t is our commitment to our clients. We remain focused on providing clear, practical advice and continuing the relationships we’ve built over time. You’ll still be working with the same dedicated team, just under a new name. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built at Race & Company, and equally excited about where we’re going as Coast Mountain Law.

We’re pleased to share that Race & Company LLP is now Coast Mountain Law LLP, effective April 20, 2026.
This change reflects how our firm has grown, building on decades of trusted legal service while expanding our presence across British Columbia. Following our recent growth, including the acquisition of Mountain Law Corporation, our new name better reflects both where we come from and where we are headed.
While our name is changing, our work remains the same. You will continue to work with the same people, with the same focus on clear, practical legal advice.
