Accused individuals must pay a cash security deposit for the FULL pledged amount within two business days of their release from custody 😮

Payment Method

Return or Forfeiture
The money is returned at the end of the case if the accused obeys all release conditions. It is forfeited if conditions are breached.

Surety Changes
Sureties must provide updated identification and contact details, and their information will be tracked via a new centralized database.

Strict Enforcement
The province is expanding debt collection powers—including bank garnishments and property liens—for unpaid bail amounts.

Legal Challenges
Civil liberties groups and defense lawyers argue that the policy is unconstitutional and creates an unfair system that penalizes low-income defendants

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the Criminal Lawyers' Association announced plans for an urgent constitutional challenge against the measure.

Important Changes to Ontario Landlord & Tenant Law

Ontario's landlord and tenant laws continue to evolve, and recent legislative changes will have a significant impact on both landlords and tenants.

Shorter 7-day N4 timelines (effective September 21, 2026), requiring landlords and tenants to act much more quickly when dealing with rent arrears.
120-day N12 notice requirements (effective September 21, 2026), meaning landlords intending to occupy a rental unit themselves or on behalf of a purchaser must plan well in advance.
A greater focus on rent arrears at L1 hearings, with maintenance and repair issues becoming more limited in non-payment proceedings as the new rules are implemented.
A clearer framework for persistent late-payment (N8) applications, providing additional guidance for both landlords and tenants.
New tenant rights regarding portable and window air conditioners, including when they may be installed and when landlords may recover reasonable electricity costs.
