IRCC introduces mandatory upfront medical exams for Express Entry permanent residence applications starting August 2025
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced a significant policy change requiring all Express Entry permanent residence applicants to complete medical examinations before submitting their applications. Currently, applicants submit their complete permanent residence application first, then await IRCC instructions to complete required medical exams. This change will not affect applications submitted before the implementation date or non-Express Entry permanent residence applications. Effective August 21, 2025, the change aims to reduce processing times by ensuring all medical requirements are fulfilled upfront, which may help eliminate delays caused by medical exam scheduling and results verification after application submission.

IRCC updated proof of funds for the Atlantic Immigration Program

As of July 29, 2025, IRCC has revised the settlement fund requirements for the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP). A single applicant must now show at least $3,815, while a family of four needs $7,090. These updates align with the new low-income cut-off (LICO) thresholds and could affect applicant eligibility. Funds must be readily available, personal savings only, not borrowed or locked in assets like real estate. Official bank letters showing account balances and history are required. If applying with a spouse, either joint or individual accounts can be accepted with proof of access. Those already working in Canada on a valid work permit are exempt, but newcomers are advised to bring more than the minimum and declare amounts over $10,000 at the border.

Canada extended temporary measures for Palestinians as the Gaza crisis continues

Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab announced that Canada will extend special immigration measures for Palestinians currently in Canada who cannot return home due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The measures, first introduced in December 2023, provide fee-exempt permits and status extensions for Palestinians in Canada and family members of Canadian residents who fled Gaza after October 7, 2023. To date, over 1,750 people from Gaza have been approved to enter Canada after security screening, with more than 860 having already arrived safely. Officials continue processing applications while advocating for those still trapped in the region.
