Canada’s Supreme Court has clarified that sentencing judges must consider the circumstances of both Indigenous offenders and victims.

In *R. v. Cope*, decided October 9, 2026, the Court dismissed an appeal and addressed how these circumstances must be considered during sentencing.

This past Monday, Karma Legal attended Consulate General of India - Toronto's seminar on Empowering Indian Women in Canada. Where our founder, Riddhi Agarwal was one of the panelist who talked about the consulate's One Stop Centre for Women initiative and also delivered insights on how women can reach out and get support on their legal battles by simply dialling the consulate's helpline number and talking to the representatives over the phone. The event was a massive success and one for the history books for both the Consulate General of India - Toronto & Karma Legal.

Did you know? 🇨🇦 Canada’s bail laws changed on July 15, 2026.

In certain cases involving repeat or violent offences, weapons offences, auto theft, home invasions and human trafficking, getting bail may now be more difficult.

One major change is the expansion of reverse-onus provisions. This means that, in certain circumstances, the accused may have to demonstrate why they should be released rather than the Crown having the usual burden.
Courts must also consider factors such as outstanding charges and allegations of random or unprovoked violence in applicable cases.
