An Ode to Women and Adaptability

Each year, our team at KFL reflects on what we see as issues that women face today—on a global scale, but also in the context of the work we do every day.

Over the years, we have seen women and other marginalized groups continuing to face adversaries. We have seen women rise up to challenges and to advocate for their rights but though battles have been won, equality continues to be a goal rather than a guarantee.

In a family law context, a stay-at-home parent (usually the mother) who has now separated from their spouse, for example, needs to adapt not only to co-parenting, but frequently to finding childcare and employment. Childcare is one of the main barriers to entry for many women into the workforce: its availability (or lack thereof) can impact the type of jobs a woman can take, the locations they can choose, and the hours they can work.

Of course, people of all genders can face barriers in the wake of separation, and finding childcare is a common struggle for many. But the reality remains that the burden of childcare and bearing the emotional load of running a household continues to fall disproportionately onto women. They are expected to rise to the new challenges and find ways to adapt—because there is often no other option. Spouses in a separated family are usually expected to become economically self-sufficient—and all too often this can present a challenge for women who have given up a place in the workforce to focus on raising a family.

Women continue to fight for equality. Until then, we adapt and we problem-solve to achieve our goals.

We are proud of the accomplishments women have achieved in the last year, small scale or globally but we will continue to provide a voice and support for equality.

As Access to Justice Week continues, is taking time to highlight the value of mediation and how it helps make justice more accessible for family law clients.

Anyone who has been to court recently has seen how difficult it can be to have a matter heard before a judge. Court time is limited, and delays are common. Mediations, on the other hand, can be scheduled at any time and often move forward much faster than the court process.

Our lawyers and mediators understand how powerful mediation can be in helping families resolve issues efficiently and with less stress. That’s why we are committed to providing cost‑effective mediation solutions for those who need them most.

New Year new school?

January is normally the time where parents will begin registering their children for kindergarten, high school or look into changing schools. For separated families registering a child in school can cause conflict between parents, especially if they don’t agree on what school to register their child in.

An issue like this should not go to court nor should parties spend high legal fees to decide where to register a child for school. Going to court can be expensive but and there is no guarantee that a judge will grant an order by a registration deadline. With Kitsilano Family Law’s Focused Mediations, our skilled mediators can help parties focus on this issue and come to an agreement, so they don’t miss out on school registrations.

Contact us today to book a focused mediation with one of our mediators to help you move forward.
