Is an AI-generated Will valid in BC? 💼

It can be. A Will made with AI is valid in BC when it meets the signing and witnessing requirements in the Wills, Estates and Succession Act (WESA). BC has recognized electronic Wills since 2021. That rule was not written with AI in mind, so it remains the guide until new legislation is introduced.

Meeting those requirements is the starting point. A valid Will can still be open to challenge, include terms that do not fit BC estate law or leave out what matters to your family.

One of the key components missing in AI Wills is context. Unlike a human estate lawyer, AI doesn’t have the full picture of your family and your assets. While you can feed it this information, the resulting Will might be more guesswork, potentially leaving your family in a difficult situation after you pass. Additionally, AI can reference non-BC estate law, confusing resources from other provinces or countries.

A landmark Supreme Court of Canada ruling is changing how Canadian courts treat intimate partner violence.

On October 5th, from 5:30 to 6:30 PM, join Lindsay Kenney Partner Fanda Wu for a virtual lecture exploring the impacts of Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia, 2026 SCC 16.

In May of 2026, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled to recognize a new tort of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Canada in the case of Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia.

This form of IPV isn’t marked by just physical abuse, but rather it is coercive control that includes physical and sexual violence, emotional and psychological abuse, financial control, and litigation abuse, which limits a partner’s dignity, autonomy, and equality in the relationship. The Court also recognized that forcing plaintiffs to separate experiences of IPV into distinct incidents doesn’t truly reflect the nature of the harm done to them and risks inadequate compensation.

This is a major shift in the way violence between partners is handled by Canadian courts, which is why Fanda is here to help practitioners with files involving family violence understand its implications. This lecture will cover the elements of the new tort, its potential applications, and things for practitioners and plaintiffs to be aware of, such as limitation periods.

This lecture will count for 1.0 CPD hours, including .5 hours for practice management. The lecture is free for self-litigants and AC volunteers, $100 for lawyers and legal professionals, and $90 for community friends.
