The Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF) contributes internationally respected research and expertise to accelerate the global shift toward sustainable oceans. Housed at The University of British Columbia, Canada’s premier west coast university, and grown from the core of the Fisheries Centre, the IOF addresses issues of local and global concern through a growing network of global partners

in government, academia, coastal communities, non-profit organizations, and the business sector. We welcome new students and faculty members across a wide range of disciplines, including zoology, economics, marine geochemistry, resource management, anthropology and sociology, marine and aquatic ecology, international law and public policy. We envision a world in which the oceans are healthy and their resources are used sustainably and equitably. Together, we are leading the way to healthy and sustainable marine and freshwater systems through excellent research, inspirational education and innovative societal engagement.

Today’s solution is for this country to mandate that laundry appliances include a built-in microfiber filter—like a lint trap for your washer that captures up to 90% of fibers at the source. Oregon, California, and Ontario have proposed such legislation, and it's already law in France. https://www.hilltimes.com/2026/06/04/plastic-sunset-canada-has-a-generational-opportunity-to-protect-the-oceans-while-boosting-the-economy/506542/

Global ocean objectives and targets, whether for funding, conservation or to measure economic impacts are a crucial element of ongoing efforts to support conservation. But what matters most are the people who steward those resources and ecosystems.

There is no shortage of global objectives and targets driving ocean conservation. However, protecting oceans depends on the communities that steward them.
