đź’Ť When an engagement ends, who keeps the ring?

A recent B.C. Civil Resolution Tribunal decision ordered a woman to reimburse her former fiancé more than $5,000 for an engagement ring after the relationship ended before marriage.

The tribunal confirmed an important principle under B.C. law: in most cases, an engagement ring is considered a conditional gift, meaning if the marriage does not happen, the ring is generally expected to be returned.

The case also highlights how text messages, conduct after separation, and property laws for unmarried couples can significantly affect the outcome of a dispute.

Relationship breakdowns are emotional, but legal clarity matters when it comes to property, support, and separation issues.

If you have questions about separation, common-law relationships, or family property rights in British Columbia, the team at Illuma Family Law is here to help: www.illumalaw.com/contact

NEW BLOG 🌟➡️ What Does the Supreme Court of Canada’s New Intimate Partner Violence Decision Mean for Families in Vancouver?

A major new decision from the Supreme Court of Canada could change how family violence is addressed in family law cases.

The Court officially recognized a new legal claim acknowledging that abuse is not always physical. Emotional abuse, coercive control, intimidation, and financial control can also cause serious harm.

For many survivors, this is an important step toward greater legal recognition and protection.

The Supreme Court of Canada has issued a landmark ruling recognizing intimate partner violence as its own civil wrong, allowing survivors to sue for damages related to coercive control, emotional abuse, intimidation, economic abuse, and other forms of abuse within intimate relationships.

This is a massive step forward in how the legal system recognizes the realities and long-term impacts of intimate partner violence.

This decision acknowledges an important reality: intimate partner violence is not limited to physical harm. Coercive control and psychological abuse can have profound and lasting impacts on a person’s dignity, autonomy, and safety.

At Illuma Family Law, we know how complex and difficult these situations can be. This ruling marks significant progress in recognizing the full scope of harm survivors may experience and expanding access to legal remedies.
