📊 Canada’s Inflation Rate Rises to 3.1% in September, up from 3.0% in August, largely driven by rising gasoline and energy prices. ⛽

Here are the key highlights:
🔹 Gasoline prices surged 27.8% year over year, pushing overall energy prices up 19.0%.

🔹 Grocery price increases slowed, with food purchased from stores rising 1.7% year over year, down from 2.8% in August. However, grocery prices remain 33% higher than in September 2020.

🔹 Shelter costs rose 1.8% year over year, while rent prices increased by 2.8%.

🔹 Core inflation remained relatively stable, suggesting that price pressures outside the more volatile categories remain comparatively contained.

💡 What does this mean? Rising fuel costs are putting renewed pressure on inflation, while slower grocery price growth offers some relief to households.

👀 All eyes will be on the Bank of Canada’s interest rate announcement next Wednesday, October 28, as policymakers assess the latest inflation data and its implications for the direction of interest rates.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a $2-billion national heat pump rebate program to help Canadians upgrade their heating systems and lower energy bills.

Electric heat pumps work by transferring heat from the outside air into the home, unlike traditional heating systems which just generate it. They consume less energy by using electricity more efficiently to heat and cool homes, and have lower greenhouse gas emissions. Heating and cooling is in one system.

Launching in early 2027—with retroactive eligibility for installations starting in fall 2026—the program offers grants up to $10,000 for low- to median-income households and a flat $2,000 rebate for higher earners.

The initiative aims to retrofit over one million homes, allowing families switching from oil, propane, or inefficient baseboards to save an average of $1,400 annually on utilities through a fast-tracked, 24-hour online pre-approval portal.

Once the program is up and running, Canadians can quickly apply for the rebate when their existing heating system breaks down and they decide to replace it with a new heat pump system, said the government. They can also apply as their heating system approaches the end of its service life and they want to make the transition before a breakdown occurs.

〰️ 𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗥𝗢 𝗩𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦 𝗦𝗘𝗣𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 〰️

Vancouver’s home sales last month were dropped largely driven by few apartment transactions; attached and detached home sales stayed strong.

According to the latest Greater Vancouver Realtors (GVR) Market Report, home sales in the Vancouver region were 8.4% lower last month compared with a year ago, driven largely by a decline in apartment-style home transactions. Despite the overall decrease, attached and detached home sales were slightly above last year’s levels.

GVR says there were 1,717 home sales in September, which was 25% below the 10-year seasonal average (-7.6% & 8.4% YoY).

The composite benchmark price for all types of residential properties in Vancouver was $1,075,900 (-0.6% MoM & -5.5% YoY).

For detached homes 🏡, the benchmark price was $1,784,700 (-0.8% MoM & -7.3% YoY).

For townhouses 🏘️, the benchmark price was $1,016,700 (-1.2% MoM & -4.7% YoY).

For apartment homes 🏢, the benchmark price was $682,500 (-0.5% MoM & -6.2% YoY).

Across all detached, attached, and apartment property types, the sales-to-active listings ratio for September 2026 was 10.9%. By property type, the ratio was 9.7% for detached homes, 12.2% for attached homes, and 11.4% for apartment homes.

There were 5,852 new listings on the market last month, down 10.3% YoY but 5.7% above the 10-year average.

Meanwhile, total inventory fell 4% YoY to 16,394, which was 24.3% above the long-term average.

StatCan said job losses were nearly evenly split between full- and part-time work and were concentrated in the public sector. September now marks the steepest single month of job losses since February.

There was little change in the private sector and self-employment in August, but the public sector shed 20,000 positions in its third straight month of losses. The business, building and other support services sector led declines, followed by public administration, natural resources and utilities.

Provincially, 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗰 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟰𝟵,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, while Ontario and British Columbia both shed 20,000 positions. Alberta added 23,000 roles.

The September jobs figures mark the Bank of Canada’s last look at the labour market before its next interest rate decision set for Oct. 28.
