Dangerous dogs or dangerous owners?

In this clip from the CLEBC course Animal Law Express, animal law expert V. Victoria Shroff, KC challenges an all-too-common assumption in dangerous dog cases: that the focus should be solely on the animal.

Instead, she raises a broader question about whether the law places enough attention on owner behaviour and responsibility. In this clip, she explores how negligence, accountability, and human decision-making may play a central role in preventing incidents—perhaps even more than the conduct of the dog itself.

▶️ Watch the clip below for a thought-provoking look at how animal law continues to evolve at the intersection of public safety, municipal enforcement, and owner responsibility.

Animal Law Express will be rebroadcast on July 13 and 20 as part of CLEBC’s Summer Series. You can sign up here: https://store.cle.bc.ca/productdetails.aspx?title=Animal-Law-Express-2026&cid=2335

Civil litigation continues to demand both strong procedural foundations and strategic adaptability at every stage of a file. CLEBC’s upcoming program Mastering Civil Litigation: Select Topics Edition brings together practical guidance designed to support counsel working across the full lifecycle of a file.

For those newer to practice, the two-day program offers a clear and practical roadmap through the civil litigation process, from pleadings and evidence gathering through to chambers advocacy, trial preparation, and courtroom presentation. The focus is on building confidence in managing files and understanding how each procedural step shapes the overall strategy of a case.

For more experienced counsel, the sessions provide an opportunity to refine approach and revisit key litigation tools, with discussion of current developments including petition proceedings post-Cepuran, summary trial practice, and effective advocacy alongside self-represented litigants. Participants will also benefit from insights shared by members of the judiciary on what makes advocacy effective in both chambers and trial settings.

Taking place June 8 and 9 in Vancouver and via webinar, this program is designed to meet you where you are in your practice. There is still space available for the in-person session, offering the chance to engage directly with faculty and peers, ask questions in real time, and deepen learning through live discussion. A webinar option is also available for those joining remotely.

When disputes arise within closely held companies, counsel can find themselves navigating increasingly complex conflict issues.

CLEBC’s newest Practice Point, “Caught in Between: Conflicts Issues in Closely Held Company Disputes,” by Danny Urquhart of Olthuis van Ert, explores the challenges that emerge when shareholders or directors become divided and the corporation’s interests no longer align with either faction.

Originally presented as part of CLEBC’s Commercial Litigation course, this practical paper examines key questions surrounding representation, conflicts of interest, and the risks of acting for multiple parties as disputes escalate. It also provides valuable guidance on avoiding disqualification and managing potential liability concerns in high-stakes corporate litigation.

Whether you are a commercial litigator or advise closely held companies, this Practice Point offers practical insights to help you navigate some of the most challenging ethical and strategic issues in shareholder disputes.
