A construction lien is a legal claim against a property, securing payment for unpaid work or materials (like labour, supplies, or improvements) provided to a construction project, giving suppliers, contractors, and labourers a powerful tool to get paid by placing a hold on the property's sale or refinance. Governed in Ontario by the Construction Act, it essentially attaches to the property's title (or the contract for public projects) and forces payment by creating a financial encumbrance until resolved, with strict deadlines for registration and action.

Ebrar Nizami; after earning his LL.B with Honours, immersed himself in hands-on legal training across a broad range of practice areas, including family, criminal, and civil litigation.

He later refined his skills at a respected boutique family law firm, where he managed complex cases involving property division, spousal and child support, parenting time, and decision-making responsibilities. His work often involved high-conflict matters, allowing him to develop a strong foundation in both negotiation and litigation.

Heather Douglas is an experienced civil litigator.

She has appeared before the Superior Court of Justice and various tribunals in Ontario. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 2013. Heather's practice includes providing opinions on insurance coverage issues, drafting commercial agreements, and litigating civil matters that include construction law, contract disputes, real property, and employment law.

Heather serves as an Advisor to other lawyers through the Law Society of Ontario's Coach and Advisor Network (CAN). She has also co-authored two chapters for the textbook Civil Procedure and Practice in Ontario on non-compliance with the Rules of Civil Procedure and Part VI of the Courts of Justice Act regarding Judges and Officers for CanLII. She has previously volunteered with the 519 Legal Clinic and the Pro Bono Ontario Hotline.
