Alter and his colleagues demonstrated that a previously unknown virus transmitted hepatitis; a group of diseases that cause inflammation of the liver. The finding was an important step in developing blood tests and new medications that have saved millions of lives.

He shared the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Michael Houghton and Charles Rice “for the discovery of Hepatitis C virus”.
