Canada's citizenship by descent rules have undergone significant changes.

Bill C-3 came into effect on December 15, 2025, changing the first-generation limit on citizenship by descent. The new rules may affect individuals born outside Canada who were previously unable to obtain Canadian citizenship because of restrictions under earlier citizenship laws.

For many individuals born abroad before December 15, 2025, the changes may mean they are now recognized as Canadian citizens under the amended legislation. Individuals who believe they are affected may need to apply for a citizenship certificate as proof of their Canadian citizenship.
