October is Latin American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the cultures, histories and contributions of Latin American communities across Canada.

Following the failed Hungarian Revolution against Soviet occupation in 1956, more than 37,000 Hungarian refugees were welcomed to Canada. They began new lives here, building families and communities while carrying their culture, traditions and heritage with them.

Sixty years later, their journey was brought to life in Toronto with the Tunnel Through Time.

The installation was created using 37,565 pieces, representing the Hungarian refugees welcomed to Canada. At one end was the symbol of the Hungarian Revolution. At the other was a Canadian maple leaf.

Between them was a journey from one home to another.

Now, 70 years after the Revolution, that story continues through generations of Hungarian Canadians. This October, as we recognize Hungarian Heritage Month in Ontario, Pace Law Firm honours that journey and celebrates the Hungarian culture, history and community that continue to thrive today.

Canada's citizenship by descent rules have undergone significant changes.

Bill C-3 came into effect on December 15, 2025, changing the first-generation limit on citizenship by descent. The new rules may affect individuals born outside Canada who were previously unable to obtain Canadian citizenship because of restrictions under earlier citizenship laws.

For many individuals born abroad before December 15, 2025, the changes may mean they are now recognized as Canadian citizens under the amended legislation. Individuals who believe they are affected may need to apply for a citizenship certificate as proof of their Canadian citizenship.

If you are completing an immigrant visa application, full disclosure is important.

Pace Law Firm immigration lawyer Michael O’Rourke explains why charges, arrests, convictions, dismissed charges, pardons, record suspensions, and expungements may still need to be disclosed when required on forms like the DS-260.

Leaving information out can create serious risks, including a possible denial for misrepresentation. Even if the charge was dismissed, it is usually better to disclose it and explain what happened.
