The decisions of the government panel, which handles claims about art lost or looted in the Nazi-era, are not legally binding, but are nearly always followed.

It is wonderful to see the proactive cooperation of the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge and that the Spoliation Advisory Panel of the UK chose to adhere to the Washington Principles and provide the claimants with the benefit of the doubt when some level of ambiguity arose. Kudos to both organizations and the excellent research work of the Mondex research team and their excellent legal counsel, Pinsent Masons:

A panel has recommended that a British museum return a landscape painting by Gustave Courbet to heirs of a Jewish engineer who joined the French Resistance.

An important settlement in an historical and very important agreement made with the author of the Washington Principles, Mr Stuart Eizenstat:

The painting, which had been left behind by a Jewish couple who left Germany as Hi**er rose to power, is to be sold in May at Christie’s.
