We are incredibly proud to share that our founder and managing partner, Jacqueline Lewis, BA, LLB, LLM, has been selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the April 2025 regional Canadian issue of TIME Magazine. πŸ†

For over 30 years, Ms. Lewis has represented refugees before the Federal Court of Canada and the Refugee Protection Division β€” building Lewis & Associates into one of Canada's leading immigration and refugee law firms, processing over 100 refugee claims per week.

Her dedication extends far beyond the courtroom: as a former president of Egale Canada, a law instructor at Carleton and Western University, and the recipient of the Laura Legge Award from the Law Society of Ontario β€” Ms. Lewis has spent her career fighting for those who need it most.

This recognition is a reflection of the values that have guided our firm since 1991.

Your refugee claim was denied. But is it really over? ❌
NOT necessarily.

The Refugee Appeal Division (RAD) gives you a chance to challenge the decision. But here’s what most people don’t know:

⏰ You only have 15 DAYS to file your appeal
⚠️ You can’t just add documents you forgot the first time
βœ… New evidence must meet strict legal criteria

The RAD isn’t a do-over. It’s a legal review with very specific rules.
At Lewis & Associates LLP, we’ve handled thousands of refugee appeals. We know what qualifies as new evidence and how to present it.

Don’t let 15 days slip away.

You don't qualify for any immigration program. You're facing removal. There is still a way β€” and it's called an H&C Application.

Humanitarian and Compassionate Applications allow individuals who don't meet standard immigration requirements to apply for permanent residence based on their personal circumstances.

To succeed, you need to show:
β†’ Establishment in Canada (work, community, roots)
β†’ Undue hardship upon removal
β†’ Best interests of children, if applicable

And here's what most people don't know β€” even after deportation, your H&C application continues. If approved, you can return to Canada as a permanent resident.
We assess, build, and represent H&C applications β€” from first consultation to final decision.

Can the government revoke your Canadian citizenship?
The answer is yes β€” and this case shows exactly how. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦βš–οΈ

Swipe through a real case involving alleged misrepresentation β€” from a marriage of convenience to permanent residency, to citizenship, to revocation proceedings. πŸ‘†
Here's what happened:

β†’ A sponsor admitted the marriage was not genuine
β†’ The Minister initiated revocation proceedings
β†’ The court upheld the revocation decision
β†’ A constitutional challenge was not successful

The key takeaways from this case:

⚠️ Misrepresentation can have serious long-term consequences β€” even years after citizenship is granted.
⚠️ Providing accurate and truthful information at every stage of the immigration process is essential.
⚠️ If you are facing a citizenship review or revocation proceeding β€” seeking legal advice early may be the most important decision you make.

Canadian citizenship is not automatically permanent if it was obtained through misrepresentation.
The government has the authority to review and revoke it β€” and the Federal Court has upheld that authority.

Jacqueline Lewis, LLM β€” founder and managing partner of Lewis & Associates LLP.

In 1991, she opened the doors of this firm with a simple belief: that access to justice shouldn't depend on how much money you have, where you're from, or what language you speak.

More than 30 years later, that belief has become 25+ lawyers, 9 languages, 10,000+ clients, and over 100 refugee claims processed every single week.

She has taught immigration law at Carleton and Western University. She spearheaded the first LGBT shelter and transitional housing project in Toronto. She has been recognized by the Law Society of Ontario, Marquis Who's Who, TIME Magazine, and Vanity Fair.

But if you ask her what she's most proud of β€” it's the clients. Every family reunited. Every refugee who found safety. Every person who walked through that door and left with a lawyer in their corner.

22-story screen. Times Square. 1.5 million people a day. πŸ—½

That's where Jacqueline Lewis, LLM β€” founder of Lewis & Associates LLP β€” was spotlighted this month by Marquis Who's Who.

She founded this firm in 1991 with one belief: that everyone deserves access to justice β€” not just those who can afford it. She built a team that speaks your language. She treats every client like family. And she never stopped fighting for the people others turned away.

Marquis Who's Who recognized her for a career defined by leadership, advocacy, and an unshakeable commitment to human rights.
We couldn't be prouder. And we couldn't be more grateful β€” to every client who made this story possible. ❀️
