I keep seeing this kind of messaging in real estate:
“Handle objections.”
“Sharpen your scripts.”
“Know exactly what to say.”
“Be more confident under pressure.”
Is this really what we want to celebrate as professional development?
There is nothing wrong with learning to communicate well. But a buyer or seller raising a concern is not always an “objection” to be overcome.
Sometimes they are right.
Sometimes the best answer is:
“That’s a fair concern.”
“I need to think about that.”
“Maybe you shouldn’t do this.”
That may not be great salesmanship.
It may, however, be very good advice.
If we want Realtors to be seen as trusted advisers rather than salespeople, perhaps we should spend a little less time teaching people how to overcome resistance and a little more time teaching judgment, listening, analysis, and when not to push the deal forward.
