Being heard can make all the difference.

During our panel discussion Recognizing Sepsis & Advocating for Better Care, sepsis survivor and advocate, Christine Caron, shared her experience of having her symptoms dismissed and the devastating consequences that followed.

Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of listening to patients, recognizing when symptoms may signal something more serious, and advocating for timely care.

What if we thought about sepsis like anaphylaxis, but triggered by an infection?

At the Sepsis Awareness Symposium, Dr. Blair Bigham shared this powerful analogy to help explain what happens to the body during sepsis, and why its effects can continue even after the infection itself is gone.

Understanding sepsis starts with understanding what’s happening in the body. The more we understand, the better equipped we are to recognize it.

As medical malpractice lawyers, we have represented individuals and families whose lives have been profoundly impacted by sepsis, including cases where delayed diagnosis, missed symptoms or other failures in care have resulted in lasting consequences.

Sepsis can progress quickly, and knowing what to look for matters. Understanding the facts can help you recognize when something may be wrong, advocate for yourself or a loved one, and support a family member or friend experiencing sepsis or its lasting effects.

A look back at a meaningful day of conversation, connection and advocacy.

From powerful personal stories to important conversations about the future of sepsis care, the Sepsis Awareness Symposium created space for people to share their experiences, learn from one another and reflect on what needs to change.

Thank you to everyone who shared their voices, expertise and experiences with us, and helped make the day so educational, impactful and inspiring.

Yesterday we had the honour of hosting the Sepsis Awareness Symposium in partnership with Sepsis Canada and the Canadian Sepsis Foundation. The day brought together sepsis survivors, healthcare professionals, and leaders to raise awareness for sepsis and its lasting impact.

The day’s conversations explored sepsis from a range of perspectives, including survivors, caregivers, doctors and researchers.

Every minute counts when it comes to sepsis, and the symposium reinforced the importance of recognizing sepsis and advocating for better care - whether for ourselves, our loved ones or others.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in-person and virtually for this important day. By having these conversations and coming together to raise awareness of the dangers of sepsis, we can help save lives.

At just 18 years old, Amalie Henze was diagnosed with sepsis following a suspected bowel obstruction. She survived, but her experience resulted in life-changing amputations.

Today, Amalie is using her experience to help others understand sepsis. Through Amalie’s Guide to Sepsis, she hopes to make information about sepsis more accessible and empower patients, families and caregivers to recognize the signs and advocate for themselves and their loved ones.

When regulation falls short, what role can litigation play in protecting young people online?

Our partner Duncan Embury explores this question in a new feature for The Walrus, examining how the legal system can push back against social media companies and drive real accountability.

It’s not theoretical for us. We’re currently representing Ontario school boards in litigation against social media companies for the documented harms to students and school communities.

As this conversation evolves, one thing’s clear: waiting for regulation isn’t an option.
