Family Law in Toronto
Not all family law is conflict, but families in crisis present a significant challenge to the integrity of all sides, the protection of children,

and the well-being of my clients. Not all such matters require litigation, and when it is possible, I recommend and provide mediation services in the belief that a peaceful resolution is the best solution. In fact, studies reveal that a mediated settlement is more likely to be followed by the parties, which comes as no surprise since the process is voluntary with both sides having the ability to make free and informed choices based on compromise. It is also in their best financial interest to mediate. In addition to family law, I also will provide mediation for estate and business matters.

Corporate and Commercial Law in Toronto
In addition to family and real-estate law, I also provide corporate and commercial law services for my clients. These range from purchase and sale of a business to business and corporate tax issues, to partnerships and corporate registration. If you are an existing client for whom I have done work, perhaps in real estate or estate planning and you now need legal advice or remedies for business related concerns, it isn’t necessary for you to search for and begin a new association with a strange lawyer when we already have an affiliation. And, of course, for my established business clients in need of domestic legal advice, it works the other way as well.

I have been a member of the BNI Champions for over 15 years. At the beginning of my membership I was not sure if I had made the right choice . There definitely is a method to the madness of BNI as a whole. It took me almost one year to gain the trust of the other members and that meant meeting with the other members to gain their trust. Slowly but surely I gained the trust and respect of the members. Once that happened business started to flow my way. I have never looked back and thank Nancy Zins (Life Insurance agent for the BNI Champions) for dragging me kicking and screaming into the BNI Champions.

BNI, through the Champions chapter and other BNI chapters represents about 20-25% of my total billings. I give back to BNI what they give to me. They are my first go to when a client or friend is looking for a recommendation on who to hire or who to use for a certain task or project. In order to maintain the trust I have built with the chapter I ensure that my work is my best and I always maintain a relationship with all of my clients garnered through BNI, and if I have to go the "extra mile" I do without hesitation.

Change to spousal support payments for common law couples in Ontario

Under Ontario’s Family Law Act, the definition of a spouse is extended to common law couples for the purposes of support obligations. It used to be that two people were considered common law if they are unmarried, but have been continuously living together in a conjugal relationship for three years or more. As well, they were considered common law if they have a child together, by birth or adoption, and have been living together for at least one year.

vs. – making the right choice.

When a home is being sold by Power of Sale or Foreclosure, it means that the lender – for example, a bank – is selling the property, not the homeowner. Either process allows the lender to recoup the funds when the homeowner has defaulted on the mortgage. At Howard Nightingale Professional Corporation, we help you understand the differences between Power of Sale and Foreclosure in Ontario, so that you can make the right decision for your particular financial needs.

Family Law, Real Estate Law, Wills & Estate Planning Law: Federal, Provincial and Territorial

Last July 6, The Ministry of the Attorney General, which is responsible for courts administration and courthouse facilities, began the first phase of a plan to return to full court operations across Ontario. Starting with a limited number of courthouses and courtrooms, operations will continue to expand, with a targeted completion date of November 1, 2020.

While this is good news, there are still some obstacles to overcome when dealing with the court system as we navigate the ‘new normal.’
