A recent immigration case caught my attention.

A biology researcher received a refusal letter stating that her work duties involved robotics equipment, control circuits, and PLC programming.

The problem was that she was not a robotics technician. She was a researcher studying respiratory illnesses at McMaster University.

The case was eventually corrected, but one detail stood out to me. A footnote at the bottom of the refusal letter stated that generative AI had been used during processing.

IRCC's position is that AI does not make immigration decisions and that officers remain responsible for the final determination.

What interests me is not whether AI made the decision. It is a different question.

If AI-assisted tools help organize, summarize, or present information before a file reaches a decision-maker, what does meaningful human review look like?

For many years, the main challenge in immigration was proving the facts: your work experience, education, language ability, and other qualifications.

Cases like this suggest that another challenge may be emerging: ensuring that the information submitted remains accurate and recognizable as it moves through increasingly automated layers of review.
