šŸŽ“ Planning to study in Canada? Your program choice may matter more than ever.

Canada’s approach to international students is evolving, and the days of choosing a program simply because it gets you into the country are becoming harder to rely on.

For 2027, Canada has set a target of 150,000 new international student arrivals, while also working toward reducing the temporary-resident population to below 5% by the end of the year. šŸ“Š

What does that mean for prospective students?

It’s a reminder to think beyond the acceptance letter. šŸ‘€

Your program choice, career prospects, work opportunities and long-term immigration strategy should all be considered before you invest your time and money into studying abroad.

A program might look attractive on paper, but what happens after graduation? šŸŽ“āž”ļøšŸ’¼

Can it support the career you want? Does the occupation offer opportunities to gain relevant Canadian work experience? And how could your overall education and career plan fit into your future immigration goals?

These are the conversations worth having before choosing a program — not after you’ve already started.

If Canada is part of your future plans, make your decision with a strategy behind it. šŸ”Ž

Here at Career Abroad, we help students explore their Canadian study options with their education, career and long-term goals in mind. šŸ¤

šŸŽ“ Planning to study in Canada in 2027? Your course choice could shape more than your education—it could influence your future career and PR options.

The study → work permit → PR route can still be possible, but here’s what you need to understand: completing a program does not guarantee a work permit or permanent residence.

Canada’s immigration landscape is evolving, and aligning your education with labour-market needs, eligible occupations and realistic employment opportunities matters more than ever.

Before choosing your college or university, ask yourself:

šŸ”¹ Career Opportunities: Does your chosen field offer realistic employment prospects in Canada?

šŸ”¹ Work Permit Eligibility: Does the program and institution meet the applicable PGWP requirements?

šŸ”¹ Canadian Work Experience: Could your future occupation help you build relevant experience for potential immigration pathways?

šŸ”¹ PR Possibilities: Which pathways might fit your occupation, qualifications, work experience and overall profile?

āš ļø Don't choose a program based on a PR promise. Choose it based on a well-researched career and immigration plan.

Your study decision deserves more than guesswork. The right planning starts before you pay your tuition fees—not after graduation.

ILAC has closed. But what does that mean for students whose studies have been affected?

If you were enrolled in an ILAC ESL or pathway program, the next step is more important than simply finding another school.

Before making a quick decision, you should consider:

• Whether an alternative ESL or pathway program fits your current academic situation
• Whether your new program aligns with your future study and career plans
• How your choice may affect your PGWP eligibility
• Whether your overall pathway continues to support your long-term PR goals in Canada

Every student’s situation is different, so there may not be one option that works for everyone.

At Career Abroad, we can help you assess your circumstances, explore suitable schools and programs, and understand the next steps before you make a decision about your studies.

šŸ“Œ Don’t choose your next school without understanding your options.

We’ve published a detailed blog explaining what students affected by the ILAC closure should consider and what steps they can take next.

šŸ’° Is a Canadian university really out of your budget? Maybe not.

When students start researching Canada, one of the first numbers they often see is $30,000+ in annual tuition. 😳 But here’s something many future students don’t realize: not every Canadian university comes with that price tag.

Depending on the university and program, some international tuition options can be around $15K–$18K per year. šŸŽ“

That means your university search shouldn’t only be about finding a program you like. It should also be about finding an option that makes sense for your budget, career plans and long-term goals. šŸ“ššŸ’”

Universities such as UNBC, MacEwan and the University of Manitoba may have options around the $15K–$16K range, while Cape Breton University, IBU, UCW, UPEI and the University of Niagara Falls Canada can offer options closer to $17K.

Looking around the $18K range? The University of Regina and Mount Allison University are also worth exploring.

But remember: tuition can vary by program, intake and other factors, so don’t choose a university based on the headline number alone. šŸ”Ž

And if you’re trying to find a Canadian university that fits both your budget and goals, here at Career Abroad, we can help you explore your options and make a more informed decision. šŸ¤

Already working in Canada on a work permit? šŸ‘€ Then this is something you may want to pay attention to.

Canada has announced a one-time measure to help transition up to 33,000 work permit holders to permanent residence during 2026 and 2027, with a focus on people who are already established in Canada and contributing to the economy, including workers in in-demand sectors and rural communities. šŸ¢

But here’s where it gets important: this does not mean every work permit holder will get PR. ā—

Your Canadian work experience, occupation, location, eligibility and overall profile can all play a role in determining which PR pathways may be available to you. šŸ“‹

So, instead of asking, ā€œWill I get PR?ā€, perhaps the better question is:

šŸ’ ā€œAm I doing enough today to prepare for my PR opportunity tomorrow?ā€

If you’re already working in Canada, take a moment to look at your current situation. Is your work experience strengthening your profile? Are there pathways you haven’t explored yet? Could a different strategy improve your options? šŸ”Ž

And if you’re unsure what your next step should be, here at Career Abroad, we can help you understand your potential PR pathway and plan ahead with greater clarity. šŸ¤

Was your ILAC program affected by the closure?šŸ“š

If you were enrolled in an ILAC ESL or pathway program, you may be wondering:

ā“ What happens to my studies?
ā“ Can I continue my program somewhere else?
ā“ What are my ESL or pathway options?
ā“ What about my study permit and future plans?
ā“ Will my new program support my academic and career goals?

Don’t panic — there may still be options available to help you continue your education journey in Canada.

At Career Abroad, we can review your situation, academic progress and future goals, and help you explore suitable ESL, pathway and post-secondary options.

Your next school shouldn't just be a quick replacement. It should fit into your bigger academic and career plan.

Your ILAC journey may have changed — but your Canadian study journey doesn't necessarily have to end.

Individual study permit, PGWP and immigration outcomes depend on your specific circumstances and current Canadian requirements.

šŸ‘€ CAN YOU REALLY STUDY FOR 6 MONTHS WITHOUT A STUDY PERMIT?

For some eligible work permit holders, a temporary IRCC measure may allow them to study for up to 6 months without a study permit.

But here’s what you shouldn’t overlook: being allowed to study for 6 months doesn’t automatically mean every short course is the right choice for you. šŸŽ“

Before enrolling, consider your:

šŸ“š Education & work experience — Does the course make sense with your existing background?

šŸ“ Current location & profile — Your circumstances can affect how the option applies to you.

šŸŽÆ Career & PR plans — A short course should fit into your bigger education, career, and settlement strategy.

The goal isn’t simply to find a course that lasts 6 months. It’s to understand how that course fits into your overall plan.

Because sometimes, a short course can be part of a bigger plan—but only when chosen carefully.

Choosing a Canadian program only because you think it will help with PR? It may be time to look at the bigger picture. šŸ‘€

Your education should not only support your Canada immigration plans—it should also help you build a career with strong earning potential, stability, and long-term opportunities.

There are several career options in Canada with reported earnings in the $85K–$115K+ range, including Energy Systems Technologist, Engineering Technologist, Air Transportation Worker, Heavy Equipment Technician, Electromechanical Technologist, Construction Manager, and Electrical & Power Systems Installer.

But here’s something important: a high-paying career does not automatically mean it is the right career for you.

The program you choose should make sense for your education, previous experience, interests, skills, career goals, preferred location, and long-term plans.

And if Canada PR is part of your future plans, that should be considered alongside your career direction—not treated as the only deciding factor.

A program that looks attractive on paper may not necessarily fit your profile or the career you actually want to build.

So before choosing your next Canadian program, ask yourself: ā€œWhere can this education take me after graduation?ā€

Thinking about studying in Canada with Permanent Residency (PR) or long-term settlement in mind? Saskatchewan could be an option worth exploring—but there’s an important point students often overlook.

Simply choosing a program in Saskatchewan does not automatically create a pathway to PR. Your long-term immigration options can depend on several factors, including your program, institution, eligibility, work experience, occupation, and overall profile.

Saskatchewan offers study opportunities through institutions such as the University of Regina, Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Suncrest College, Great Plains College, and North West College. Depending on the program and the latest eligibility requirements, some study options may also be PGWP-eligible.

This is why choosing a program only because it has lower tuition, is easier to get admission into, or is available in a particular intake may not be enough when your bigger goal is Canada PR.

Your study decision can influence what comes next—your post-graduation work options, career direction, and potential immigration opportunities. That’s why your education plan should be considered as part of a broader study-to-PR strategy, rather than as a separate decision.

If Saskatchewan is on your list, take the time to understand your options before applying.

If you work in a skilled trade and are planning your Canadian PR journey, there’s one qualification you may want to understand better: COQ — Certificate of Qualification.

Many skilled-trades professionals focus heavily on their CRS score, language test results, education, and work experience when looking at their immigration options. These factors are important, but your trade qualification can also be an important part of the bigger picture.

A Certificate of Qualification confirms that a person is qualified to practise a specific skilled trade in Canada after meeting the requirements set by the relevant provincial or territorial authority.

For eligible candidates, having a COQ can be particularly relevant when exploring immigration options such as Express Entry’s Federal Skilled Trades Program. It can also be an important credential to understand when planning your career and settlement pathway in Canada.

However, having work experience in a trade does not automatically mean you qualify for every immigration pathway. Your occupation, trade certification, work experience, language ability, education, and other eligibility requirements all need to be considered together.

So, if you’re a skilled-trades professional thinking about Canada PR, don’t look at your CRS score in isolation. Take a closer look at the qualifications you already have—and the ones you may need.

Your trade skills are valuable. The right planning can help you understand how they fit into your overall Canada immigration strategy.

Contact Career Abroad or click the link in our bio to explore your options and understand whether a Certificate of Qualification could be relevant to your PR journey.
