The Hartman & Lloyd Story

It began with a dream. One fine summer evening, three lads sat around a table at Betty’s playing Trivial Pursuit and wondered if their collective knowledge of random trivia and useless factoids could be put to good use, or at least to the test against likeminded folk. Stumbling upon an ad for weekly trivia at the Fifth Pubhouse was like a beacon in the night. Was this their true calling?

On July 12th, 2017, Christopher Gray, Kevin Pilon and Kevin Vani entered the Fifth Pubhouse as green as grass. Sure they could answer an average of 4/6 questions on a Trivial Pursuit card with ease, but could they manage to go head to head with the best of those who happened to be passing by the Richmond and Duncan area at 7PM on a Wednesday? They would soon find out. First order of business was a name. No one remembers exactly how the name was decided upon, but combining the last names of the late great Phil Hartman and the almost never was Jake Lloyd just seemed right. Hell it kind of sounded like a law firm. The Law Firm of Hartman & Lloyd Esq. was born.

As two young and upcoming comedians cracked wise and read the questions, the newly formed Hartman & Lloyd felt confident yet cautious. After round 1 they were tied for 3rd. After round 2, they had pushed ahead into 2nd. While other teams cracked under the pressure, the members of H & L remained engaged and laid down a round 3 for the ages. It was finally time for the results.“And in first place taking home $100, Hartman & Lloyd!” It was a thrilling come from behind win and one the boys would never forget. Week after week they would return to the Fifth, making new friends (Joey, Dan, James, Cam, Jack), a few rivals (Quiz in my Pants, Wacky Inflatables, Cuties with a K) and even an enemy (Mike). There were thrilling victories and disappointing losses. When a rival team showed up one evening under the name Fartman & Void, Hartman & Lloyd knew they had made their mark.

In the fall, Chris Birrell completed the quartet and became a full time member. Like Ringo Starr before him, Birrell laid down a steady beat, ensuring the group stayed in sync, but never NSYNC. There were good times (the near perfect score during fantasy week, the drive for five in september) and there were bad times (rom com week, all of November), but the Firm kept their heads held high and claimed the first monthly prize in December. Old Tomorrow never tasted so good.
