Most team leaders shouldn’t be team leaders.
Yeah, I said it. Relax. I’m probably not talking about you. 🙂
In my experience, many team leaders are not actually leading. They’re chasing production and calling it leadership. And that’s a problem.
Because if you can’t communicate it, teach it, or demonstrate it, you have no business leading others.
Leadership is not a title. It’s a responsibility. Real leadership is built on four pillars:
Culture and value creation.
Accountability.
Training.
Systems.
That’s it. Not hype. Not branding. Not matching hoodies and a weekly meeting that doesn't happen!
The top team leaders have a few things in common:
They can clearly communicate what works
They can teach it in a way others can actually apply
They demonstrate it through their own actions, consistently
They build people, not just production
They hold standards, not just meetings
And building a team doesn’t automatically mean more deals. In many cases, it actually creates more complexity, more responsibility, and more pressure.
That’s why leadership matters. Big difference.
Before you decide to grow a team, ask yourself: Can I actually lead … or is it time to strengthen that skill first?
