Combatting Hate - What Lawyers Can Do & Why They Must
Wednesday, April 29, 2026, 11:45-1:15, DLA Piper, Toronto

Join us as we discuss what lawyers can do, and why they must, in response to rising levels of hate and intolerance in Canada.

Hate is on the rise in Canada. Police-reported hate crimes have surged, more than trebling in number over the past 15 years. The vast majority of hate crime targeting religion is aimed at the Jewish community. Synagogues, Jewish schools and community spaces, and Jewish-owned businesses have been rep...

Good Friday Reflections: Truth, Mercy, and the Courage to Stand Firm

Today, on Good Friday, we pause to remember the Passion of Christ, His suffering and death, and the deep love He showed through His sacrifice. It is a day to reflect on truth, justice and mercy, and the cost of standing for what is right.

For those of us in the legal profession, Good Friday invites us to think more deeply about the meaning of justice. It reminds us that true justice is not just about rules or decisions, but about serving others with humility, compassion and courage, even when it’s difficult.

“Justice is the moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbor. Justice toward God is called the ‘virtue of religion.’ Justice toward men disposes one to respect the rights of each and to establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity with regard to persons and to the common good” (CCC 1807).

This day holds special meaning for our Guild. St Thomas More, our Patron, gave up everything to stay true to his conscience and his faith. His example challenges us to live with integrity and to remain faithful to what we believe, even when the cost is high.

As we reflect on the events commemorated on Good Friday through Easter Sunday, may we be renewed in our commitment to serve with honesty, mercy and a deep sense of purpose.

We wish you and your loved ones peace and blessing on this holy and solemn day and throughout the Easter season.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! ☘️

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day – A Global Tribute to Irish Heritage ☘️

March 17th is one of the most widely celebrated cultural holidays across the world – St. Patrick’s Day! This lively occasion is marked by festive parades, green attire, traditional Irish music, and joyful gatherings.

Originally established in the 17th century as a religious feast honoring St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, the day has evolved into a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and heritage, embraced by people of all backgrounds.

One of the most recognizable symbols of St. Patrick’s Day is the shamrock ☘️. St. Patrick is believed to have used the three-leaf clover to illustrate the Holy Trinity, making it a lasting symbol of faith. Today, it is also associated with luck and good fortune.

From grand parades to unique traditions, cities across the globe join in the revelry. Chicago dyes its river green, Dublin hosts one of the largest parades in the world, and landmarks from Sydney to New York light up in emerald hues. Of course, no celebration would be complete without traditional Irish fare – from hearty stews and soda bread to Guinness, Irish whiskey, and other beloved flavors of the Emerald Isle.

Beyond the festivities, St. Patrick’s Day is also a moment to reflect on the profound contributions of the Irish people throughout history – in literature, politics, law, and beyond. Whether you are Irish by birth or simply embrace the culture, today is a day to celebrate friendship, community, and faith.

So, put on your greenest attire, raise a glass, and may the luck of the Irish be with you today and always!

St. Patrick’s Prayer

Christ be with me.
Christ beside me.
Christ before me.
Christ behind me.
Christ at my right hand.
Christ at my left hand.
Christ be with me everywhere I go.
Christ be my friend, forever and ever.

Amen.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

On this day celebrating love, we reflect on the life of St. Thomas More, a man who showed true love, not only for his family but for truth, integrity, and God.

St. Thomas More was a devoted husband and father, known for his deep affection for his wife, and his children. Despite his immense legal and political responsibilities, he prioritized their education, faith, and well-being, writing them tender letters filled with wisdom and love.

But St. Thomas More’s greatest love was for God. Even in the face of adversity, he remained steadfast in his conscience, choosing martyrdom rather than betraying his faith and principles. His final words, “I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first,” remind us that the greatest love is one rooted in truth and sacrifice.

This Valentine’s Day, may we be inspired by St. Thomas More’s unwavering love, love for family, love for justice, and love for God.

Happy Valentine’s Day from the Thomas More Lawyers’ Guild!
