A fascinating new research study suggests that the presence of surveillance cameras may spur bystanders to assist people in distress. Considering the lack of evidence that video cameras deter crime in most circumstances, the potential that surveillance cameras, amplified by highly visible signage, may draw heightened attention and even intervention on the part of bystanders, is a finding deserving of wider attention and additional research.
New research finds the "bystander effect" can be offset by the presence of public self-awareness.
