Approvals may look like mushrooms after the rain: one here, another there, and then another.

But in immigration, positive decisions do not simply appear. Behind every approval are:

• a carefully developed strategy;
• a detailed eligibility assessment;
• complete and consistent documentation;
• clear explanations supported by evidence;
• thorough preparation and a great deal of work.

Then comes our favourite part: receiving the decision and sharing the good news with our clients.

Every application is different, and no representative can guarantee approval.

The final decision always belongs to the immigration officer. What we can do is carefully assess the circumstances, identify potential concerns and prepare the strongest application supported by the available facts.

That is the kind of harvest we love at ATA Immigration.

Speaking in Calgary, Ontario Premier Doug Ford called for faster development of nation-building projects and expressed Ontario’s support for the proposed Northern Shield Energy Corridor.

The proposal includes an approximately 3,300-kilometre crude oil pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta, to Sarnia, Ontario, using an entirely Canadian route. Ford said Ontario is prepared to consider investing public capital, presenting the project as an opportunity to strengthen energy security, create jobs and potentially generate long-term returns.

However, Northern Shield remains a proposal. Construction has not begun, and required approvals, consultation, financing, ownership and final timelines have not yet been confirmed. Ford has suggested that the pipeline could be completed in under five years, but this is a proposed target, not an approved schedule.

If the project moves forward, it could increase demand in construction, skilled trades, engineering, transportation and the energy sector. It would not, however, automatically create a work permit or immigration pathway. Eligibility would still depend on the applicable immigration program, job offer and individual circumstances.

For some applicants, exploring immigration programs across Canada can open possibilities that may not exist in their current province. For others, relocating is simply not practical.

There is no single “best province” for everyone. A proper assessment should consider:

• Your occupation and work experience
• Language test results
• Education and professional licensing
• Current immigration status
• Job offers and employer support
• Provincial labour-market priorities
• Family circumstances and willingness to relocate

Provincial nominee programs are designed for applicants who genuinely intend to live and work in the province that nominates them. Applying to a province only to obtain permanent residence, while already planning to settle elsewhere, may raise concerns about the truthfulness of your declared intentions.

Permanent residents have mobility rights within Canada, but those rights do not eliminate the requirement to provide accurate information and demonstrate a genuine intention to reside in the nominating province at the time of the application.

Before relocating or changing your immigration strategy, review both your eligibility and the practical consequences for your employment, family and status in Canada.

Would you consider moving to another province for the right PR opportunity?

Premier Danielle Smith is calling for Alberta to have greater control over economic immigration. Her proposal would more closely connect employer needs, work permits, provincial nominations and pathways to permanent residence.

The goal: retain temporary workers who are already contributing to Alberta’s economy, particularly in industries facing labour shortages.

Important context:

• Alberta can establish eligibility criteria and nominate candidates through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program.
• Alberta cannot independently issue work permits or grant permanent resident status. IRCC remains responsible for work permits, admissibility assessments and final PR decisions.
• Alberta’s 2026 nomination allocation is currently 6,603 spaces, although allocations and program priorities may change.
• The October 19 referendum asks whether Alberta should seek increased control over immigration. A “yes” vote would not automatically change anyone’s immigration status or create a new PR pathway. Further government action would still be required.

For temporary residents, the current immigration rules remain in effect. Do not allow a work permit to expire while waiting for proposed policy changes.

🇨🇦 Three immigration myths I hear all the time

Myth 1: “My friend had the same situation and received permanent residence, so I should be approved too.”

No two immigration applications are identical. Even when two people appear to have similar circumstances, differences in eligibility, work experience, immigration history, supporting evidence, admissibility and program requirements can lead to different outcomes.

Another person’s approval does not mean that you automatically qualify for permanent residence. Your eligibility and strategy must be assessed based on your own circumstances.

Myth 2: “I created an Express Entry profile, so now I just need to wait for an invitation.”

Entering the Express Entry pool does not guarantee an Invitation to Apply. Your chances depend on your CRS score, program eligibility, the type of invitation round and changing selection priorities. If your score is not competitive, it may be worth exploring ways to improve it or considering provincial and other immigration pathways.

Myth 3: “I watched a video about a program, so I know I’m eligible.”

Social media can provide helpful general information, but eligibility often depends on technical details that cannot be assessed through a short video. Work duties, NOC classification, status, education, language results, admissibility and other factors may all matter.
Your immigration strategy should be based on your complete circumstances, not someone else’s experience or a general online example.

Not sure which program fits your profile? ATA Immigration is ready to assess your situation and help you understand the available options.

🇨🇦 Is Canada preparing to increase immigration again? Not yet.

Prime Minister Mark Carney recently suggested that Canada may eventually consider a “controlled increase” in population growth once the immigration system is considered under control.

The Conservative Party has responded by opposing any increase and calling for significantly lower immigration levels, citing pressure on housing, healthcare and employment.

What is officially confirmed right now?
▪️ Canada’s current Immigration Levels Plan sets permanent resident admissions at 380,000 annually from 2026 through 2028.
▪️ Targets for new temporary resident arrivals are 385,000 in 2026 and 370,000 annually in 2027 and 2028.
▪️ The federal government is preparing the 2027–2029 Immigration Levels Plan, expected to be presented in fall 2026.

Carney’s comments and the Conservative response are political positions. They do not, by themselves, change immigration law, current program requirements or existing application procedures.

Until the government publishes the new Levels Plan and any related policy changes, applicants should rely on current IRCC rules rather than political headlines or predictions.

Follow ATA Immigration for verified updates and practical explanations of how new policies may affect applicants, workers, students and families.

New Express Entry Draw for Trades Occupations

On October 1, 2026, IRCC held a category-based Express Entry draw targeting eligible candidates with work experience in trades occupations.

▪️ Invitations issued: 3,500
▪️ Minimum CRS score: 476
▪️ Category: Trades Occupations, 2026 – Version 3
▪️ Tie-breaking date: May 28, 2026 at 16:55:23 UTC

Important: a CRS score of 476 alone was not enough. Candidates also had to qualify for an Express Entry program and meet the specific eligibility requirements for the trades category.

Received an Invitation to Apply? Review your application carefully before submitting. Your employment history, job duties, NOC classification, language results and supporting documents must confirm the information claimed in your Express Entry profile.

Still waiting for an invitation? A professional profile assessment may help identify ways to strengthen your CRS score or explore other immigration pathways.
