It’s a sad truth is that while the businesses ultimately need Compliance Groups and Professionals to guide them and ensure the regulators do not shut down their operations, they don’t always want you at the table. Aim not to be the barrier. Be the bridge!

Co-authored with Carbonelli, in our article, “User-centered compliance: How service design can get you a seat at the table”, we took an unvarnished look at how Compliance Professionals are seen by their businesses and how they can get a seat at the table by being more service-focused.

Our article was first published in Magazine in May 2025, but the message remains the same - Compliance Professionals should consider how to embed service into their programs to provide continued value.

In my newest SLAW column, we explore fraud. And, the Federal government's proposed response to fraud - Bill C-29 to establish a centralized Financial Crimes Agency. The Financial Crimes Agency will be aimed at recovering crime proceeds, investigating complex financial crimes like money laundering, and collaborating globally. Will this help make a dent in the multi-billions of fraud losses reported by victims annually? My position, it can't hurt and it's about time!

If launched, as the new centralized Financial Crimes Agency enhances in sophistication and sharpens its investigation and enforcement of financial crimes, it also means that entities that find themselves the target of financial criminals and schemes should consider how to increase their corporate agility and responsiveness. In this column, we talk about how entities can start strengthening their controls and governance practices, now, in anticipation of the launch of the Financial Crimes Agency.

Once a scandal involving RECO's Registrar and a registered real estate brokerage, iPro, became public, the fallout was swift culminating in the Province’s appointment of an Administrator, Jean Lépine, under the Safety and Consumer Statutes Administration Act, 1996 on December 1, 2025.

Mr. Lépine has been busy since his nomination in December 2025 appointing a new RECO executive and making some substantial changes. Mr. Lépine is reportedly working on some initiatives that include a “cultural renewal plan” and a “renewed governance approach.”

The government’s effective take-over of RECO reflects the loss of public confidence that RECO can effectively regulate its own industry and protect consumer funds.

It may be time to stress-test your organization’s ability to protect against public scrutiny and its own scandal if your organization has:
(1) a powerful decision-maker
(2) discretion-heavy enforcement tools
(3) public-facing responsibilities and/or responsible for trust accounts

(even if your sector isn’t real estate)

I attended the ceremony as a guest and had one of those “full-circle” moments. AmacaThera was one of my first clients when I started my Firm and getting to cheer them on in a room filled with Ontario’s life sciences leaders was genuinely energizing.

Will Canada's first-ever Grocery Code of Conduct lower food prices?

Short answer: probably not.

In my latest article for , I unpack why Canada’s new Grocery Code of Conduct, while well-intentioned, is unlikely to deliver price relief for consumers.

This piece looks at:
• What the Code actually regulates (and what it doesn’t)
• Why voluntary, industry‑led governance often gets watered down
• How broad language and limited enforcement weaken self‑regulation

This Code is a useful case study in the limits of industry self‑regulation, especially when participation is voluntary and consequences could lack teeth.

For those of us working in governance, compliance, risk, or regulatory policy, this is a familiar story, but it is playing out in a very public, very expensive way.

❓Is it too early to criticize this Code of Conduct and its impact?
❓Is government intervention inevitable?
❓Did grocers miss the opportunity to meaningfully address public affordability concerns?

While there will always be a small number of employees who intentionally disregard organizational rules. Let's talk about the even bigger issue: 'ignorant' non-compliance.

'Ignorant' non-compliance represents a heightened risk for businesses when employees are unaware of how to comply or even that compliance is necessary.

This can occur when policies are difficult to locate, read, or remember; when employees skip out on training; or when AI solutions fail to provide the needed guidance.
